Carner and Gregor’s BARELY LEGAL contest seeks college students for New York concert

New York, NY – After three sold-out editions, Carner & Gregor’s BARELY LEGAL SHOWTUNE EXTRAVAGANZA is back for its biggest concert event yet. Join Samuel Carner and Derek Gregor, of New York’s hottest up-and-coming musical theatre writing teams, as they take you on a tour of their diverse work sung by the most promising young musical theatre performers in the country. Submissions will be accepted for the chance for eight lucky college students to make their New York concert debut in BARELY LEGAL on July 23 at 8pm at (le) Poisson Rouge.

In addition to having the incredible opportunity to win the chance to make their New York concert debut in BARELY LEGAL, college students will also get the chance to work directly with Carner & Gregor on the material and have a New York musical theatre experience like none other. Contestants will be judged by a panel of Broadway professionals. “We have seen so many fantastic young singers perform our songs across the country that we wanted to give them the opportunity to show what they can do here in New York,” says Sam Carner. Derek Gregor continued, “We are so excited to give these college students a springboard like this to dive head first into New York’s musical theatre scene. We are proud of what our alumni have done and can’t wait to expand the BARELY LEGAL family.” Past performers from BARELY LEGAL have performed on Broadway in Follies, Annie Get Your Gun and the upcoming Rebecca, Off- Broadway in Carrie, Myths & Hymns, as well as all around the country.

The panel of judges will include Broadway casting director Michael Cassara (New York Musical Theatre Festival), Broadway actor Andrew Kober (HAIR), Broadway conductor and music director Joel Fram (Wicked, Sweet Smell of Success), up-and-coming director/producer Brandon Ivie (New Voices) and concert director Marlo Hunter.

The concert will be hosted by Broadway’s Andrew Kober (HAIR). Marlo Hunter will direct the concert with music direction by Derek Gregor. Brandon Ivie produces.

Sam Carner and Derek Gregor’s musical Unlock’d won a Richard Rodgers Award and went on to be produced at NYMF 2007, where it won the “Best of the

Fest” audience award and received Talkin’ Broadway Citations for “Outstanding New Musical” and “Outstanding Original Theatrical Score.” Unlock’d has gone on to workshops at Theatre Works, Palo Alto and the Ravinia Festival outside Chicago. A workshop of their song cycle Island Song was presented at the 92nd St. Y Tribeca in October of 2011, and the piece is being workshopped at Princeton University and elsewhere this spring. They have presented a number of concerts of their songs, including Sing, But Don’t Tell at NYMF 2009 and Buzzed, a 2010 concert with 12 cast members from the Broadway cast of HAIR. Two of their songs were nominated for 2011 MAC Awards (“Sing, But Don’t Tell” for Best Special Musical Material and “After Hours” for Best Song).
