A CHRISTMAS STORY: THE MUSICAL - Des Moines Playhouse

Auditions for the Family Holiday Classic A Christmas Story, The Musical will be held at the Des Moines Playhouse at 6:30 P.M. on Monday, Sept. 23. All auditions are open to the public; no one is pre-cast. Those auditioning must bring a prepared solo; an accompanist will be provided as well as the ability to play a track from an iPhone or similar device. Questions about auditions should be directed to Robin Spahr, 515-974-5365.

A Christmas Story, The Musical contains feature roles for 1 man and 1 woman ages 35-50, 2 women ages 20-40, 2 boys ages 14-22, 1 boy age 10-13, 4 girls ages 14-22, and an ensemble of males and females ages 14 and up. Families are welcomed and encouraged to audition together. Performances are Dec. 6-23, 2019, with school matinees Dec. 16-17. Where race, ethnicity, gender, age, or other personal differentiations are not demanded by the needs of the script, the Playhouse casts its plays without regard to these attributes. A Christmas Story, The Musical is directed by Maxwell Schaeffer with choreography by Megan Helmers and music direction by Brenton Brown.

Set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, IN, the musical follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts: an Official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Rebuffed at every turn with a similar echoing response, Ralphie plots numerous schemes to achieve his desperate desire for the coveted BB gun. All the iconic scenes from the movie are here: Ralphie’s friend, Flick, getting his tongue stuck to the flagpole; his brother, Randy, getting dressed in his snowsuit; the bullies, Farkus and Dill; the leg lamp award; the bunny suit; the Christmas dinner; and many others.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
