Seeking strong male and female actors/singers

Auditions are being held at AEA Chicago 557 W Randolph, Chicago, IL 60661
December 2, 2013 10am-3pm
May extend auditions to December 3, 2013.

Prepare 32 bars in the style of the show (no Spelling Bee please.) Have 2nd song prepared in case you are asked to sing an additional song. Accompanist will be provided. Bring current headshot and resume.

Equity appointments. EMC and non-union will be seen time permitting.

Character Breakdown:

The Adults:
Rona Lisa Peretti:?30’s – 40’s. Female. A former Bee winner who is passionate about spelling, Ms. Peretti is the moderator of the Bee. Needs excellent improvisational skills. Mezzo/soprano. (up to A)

Vice Principal Douglas Panch:?30’s – 50’s. Male. The announcer and adjudicator who is returning to the Bee after an unfortunate incident some years previous. Needs excellent improvisational skills and comic timing. Baritone. (no solo singing)

Mitch Mahoney:?25 – 40. Male. Ex-con serving community service hours as a “comfort counselor” for the spellers who are eliminated. High tenor.

The Kids:
Note: The spellers are aged 10 to 14, but the roles are played by adults in their 20’s. ?

Olive Ostrovsky:?Female. Kind & gentle with real vulnerability. Longs for the affection of her absent parents. Shy to blossoming. Mezzo, strong high belt required. (Down to A, up to F#)

Marcy Park: Female. Classic overachiever who is under pressure to be the best at everything. Seeking actress with many physical talents, i.e., dancer, baton, splits, musical instrument(s), martial arts, sports, quirky/unusual talent a plus.
Alto/Mezzo (up to Eb)

Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre:?Female.The youngest speller. Driven. Afraid of failing & disappointing her two dads. Has tough edge and a speech impediment. Mezzo. (down to G up to Bb)

William Barfée:?Male. Touchy, obnoxious & combative with a chronic sinus condition. Spells with the aid of his “Magic Foot”. Tenor (up to Bb)??

Leaf Coneybear:?Male. Quirky, sweet and naïve. Makes it to the spelling bee by default. He is on an adventure. Bari/tenor. (up to G)

Chip Tolentino:?Male. Winner of last year’s “Bee”. Confident of repeating his success, until he is hijacked by his hormones.
Tenor. (up to B)
