High school singing competition awards $10,000 scholarship

KC SuperStar - Kansas City’s premiere high school singing competition - KC SuperStar - is holding in-person auditions on Sunday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 5. Imagine winning $10,000 for singing your favorite song!

Now in its 13th year, KC SuperStar is produced by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City (The J) and is its largest fundraiser. What’s more fun than belting out your favorite song with the chance to win thousands of dollars!

Interested high school students are encouraged to register for an audition time on Sunday, April 3, 5-7 p.m. or Tuesday, April 5, 5- 8 p.m.; walk-ins are welcome. Registration is at
kcsuperstar.org
. Once registered, those auditioning will be sent their live audition date and time.

“We are so excited to return to live, in person auditions,” said Felice Azorsky, who oversees KC SuperStar for The J. “While we were able to have auditions during the height of the Covid pandemic, there is nothing like having the kids lighting up the room with their in-person performance,” Azorsky said.

Students auditioning should prepare one song of their choice to sing A Capella (without accompaniment). The J encourages individual singers from all backgrounds, representing the full spectrum of musical genres and from across the metro area to audition for KC SuperStar. Judges for the preliminary auditions are Tammy Ruder, KC SuperStar Producer and Director, Lisa Burns, vocal coach; Keith Wiedenkeller, The J’s Director of Cultural Arts and Byron Hyde, a past KC SuperStar finalist.

This is the 13th year for the singing competition a la “The Voice”/”American Idol” and hundreds of teen singers from across the region have participated in KC SuperStar. Several competitors have continued on to perform professionally. KC SuperStar provides over $22,000 in scholarships to the Top 10 finalists. Those selected from the preliminary auditions will perform in Semifinals on Wednesday evening, June 8, in The White Theatre at The J.

KC SuperStar is The J’s major fund-raising event. It provides financial assistance to members so that they can partake in The J’s many services like the Child Development Center, CAMP, health and fitness, the arts, as well as meals and transportation for The J’s Heritage Center (65+) members. Last year, The J was able to provide $540,000 in financial aid. A portion of funds raised goes to The Reat Griffin Underwood Rising Stars Fund supporting performing arts education and training programs for youth ages 14-21 and KU Hillel.

KC SuperStar 2022 Chairs are Michelle Cole and Kurt Kavanaugh and longtime J members and dedicated community volunteers. In addition to the $10,000 Scholarship going to the KC SuperStar winner, other singers will be awarded scholarships for second place - $5,000; Third Place-$2,500; and Fourth Place-$1,000; all other finalists receive financial scholarships.
