2016 KC SuperStar auditions coming up March 30, April 3

Top prize for singing competition is $10,000 scholarship

Auditions for KC SuperStar, Kansas City’s high school singing competition ala “American Idol/The Voice,” have been set for Wednesday, March 30, 4-9:30 p.m. and Sunday, April. 3, 1-4 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City (The J), 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park, KS. Singers only need to attend one audition for the competition, which is produced by The J.

The final event will take place Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016, at the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts.

KC SuperStar 2016 will award a $10,000 scholarship prize to the best high school singer in the Greater Kansas City area who is selected through open auditions. Judges for the preliminary auditions – which are closed from the public - are area industry professionals Samantha Agron, Lisa Burns, TJ Klein and Whitney Smith. Those auditioning should be preparing to sing one song of their choice, a Capella (without accompaniment). Solo singers from all backgrounds, representing the full spectrum of musical genres and from across the metro area, are encouraged to audition. Annually, more than 200-plus high school singers compete for the coveted tittle of KC SuperStar.

Up to 25 performers will be chosen to then compete in the KC SuperStar Semifinals on Monday, June 6,in the White Theater at The J. This event is free and open to the public. At the Aug. 28 finals, a panel of professionals in the entertainment industry will judge the singers selecting the top four; the audience will then vote to determine the ultimate winner.

KC SuperStar is the annual fundraiser for The J and this year is co-chaired by Andrew and Sheryl Kaplan, longtime members and dedicated volunteers. Proceeds from KC SuperStar help provide transportation, meals, education, camp, wellness programs and the arts to so many deserving children, families, individuals and senior adults.

At the final event at the Kauffman, former Kansas City Chiefs Guard and Pro Football Hall of Famer Will Shields will be honored by The J as the Community SuperStar. Since 1993, Shields has been helping thousands of people through his Will to Succeed Foundation. He’s been recognized for his community efforts through numerous awards including his selection as the 2003 recipient of the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
