Director Matt Reher is excited about bringing Big Fish to the Ritz Theatre audiences: "There's a beautiful brilliance to seeing a show at The Ritz Theatre. When I assemble a production and artistic team at the Ritz, I find creative innovators. I consider them artists, I offer some visions, and I let them create. The Ritz offers some truly collaborative creative experiences, and the end product shows that.

Big Fish digs much deeper into the relationship between dad and son, and compels the audience to consider 'What happens when that connection isn't immediate?' No matter the strength of your relationship with your parents or parental figures, some part of this story hits close to home. It definitely does for me.

Big Fish is a perfect show for The Ritz Theatre stage. It delivers a 'big musical' performance with a 'small musical' cast that lets the audience focus on the story.

Big Fish is absolutely enjoyable for the entire family!

Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest! Edwards incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him. But his son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his fathers epic tales.Overflowing with heart and humor, Big Fish is an extraordinary musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre for an experience thats richer, funnier, and BIGGER than life itself.

There have been a number of professional stage productions including Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre in 2013. The musical ran for thirty-four previews and ninety-eight regular performances.Of the Broadway production, Chris Jones, of the Chicago Tribune wrote: "With the indefatigable, deeply engaged and seemingly irreplaceable Norbert Leo Butz driving its storytelling and willing the show's crucial emotional subtext into being by sheer force of talent and will, 'Big Fish' arrives on Broadway as an earnest, family-friendly, heart-warming and successful new American musical."

The Big Fish film adaptation is a 2003 American fantasy comedy-drama based on the 1998 novel. The film was directed by Tim Burton and stars Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange, and Marion Cotillard. Other roles are performed by Robert Guillaume,* Steve Buscemi, Helena Bonham Carter, Matthew McGrory, Alison Lohman, and Danny DeVito among others.

* In a career that spanned more than fifty years, Robert Guillaume worked extensively on stage, television and film. For his efforts he was nominated for a Tony Award for his portrayal of Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, and twice won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of the character Benson DuBois, once in 1979 on Soap and in 1985 on Benson. He also won a Grammy Award in 1995 for his spoken word performance of an audiobook version of The Lion King. He is the author of a fascinating autobiography "Guillaume: A Life" in which he describes his ascent to the Broadway stage, and his move to Hollywood as one of the first major black stars of a television series, inspiring a generation of black entertainers who followed him.

In the film Edward Bloom (Finney), a former traveling salesman in the Southern United States with a gift for storytelling, is now confined to his deathbed. Will (Crudup), his estranged son, attempts to mend their relationship as Bloom relates tall tales of his eventful life as a young adult (portrayed by McGregor in the flashback scenes).

The film received award nominations in multiple film categories, including four Golden Globe Award nominations, seven nominations from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, two Saturn Award nominations, and an Oscar and a Grammy Award nomination for Danny Elfman's original score.

The Ritz Presents a Special American Sign Language/Shadow Interpreter Performance on Saturday, May 11th @ 1pm!

The Ritz Theatre is proud to announce that a special American Sign Language/Shadow Interpreter Performance of The Musical Big Fish will be presented on Saturday, May 11th @ 1pm! The Ritz Theatre is an award winning theatre for their work in shadow interpreting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaQY52JESVc. This You Tube clip explains the process and product of the work of the theatres cast and the interpreters. We are very excited to share this with our patrons and their families. American Sign Language is a beautiful language to watch and makes the theatrical experience so much more meaningful for our patrons that are deaf or hard of hearing that know American Sign Language.

This production is being dedicated to the memory of Karen Dyer, an actress and interpreter for the Ritz Theatre Co. and is featured in our You Tube story. Karen spearheaded our work with the Deaf and Hard of hearing community and died much too young from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. One of the hardest things for us and for Karen was when she began to lose her second language of American Sign Language as she began to lose the use of her hands. Thank you Karen, for all you did and continue to do as you inspire us to continue your work.

Ritz' production of Big Fish is whimsical, funny and charming. It is emotional tapestry of sentiments that will leave you undoubtedly laughing, smiling, and sometimes teary-eyed. This father-son musical is relatable, teaching us to 'be the hero of your story' (make the most of life and create your own destiny). Big Fish is a family musical about the important role of stories in our lives, and will make you appreciate your own family's anecdotes.
