theatre KAPOW reaches through time and up to the stars with its next production. Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson will play at the Derry Opera House from April 26 through May 4, 2019.When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isnt allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women computers, charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in girl hours and has no time for the womens probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time, attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a womans place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when womens ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications. Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.In Henrietta Leavitt, we see a strong character who struggles to follow her path without the distractions and pressures of what was expected of women in the early 1900s, says director, Rachael Longo. This struggle to find balance between the sometimes very lonely experience of pursuing ones passions and making human connections in this grand universe is timeless and still very relevant to our society today. For me, one of the biggest questions in Silent Sky (and all good plays ask questions) is, what is a legacy? Is it always a great impact that spreads far and wide or does it exist in the eyes of those who love you? While Ms. Longo is no stranger to tKAPOW audiences having appeared on stage in many previous productions, this is her directing debut for the company. The show features a tremendous cast including Emily Karel, Carey Cahoon, Gail Angelis, Candace Gatzoulis, and Jimmy Stewart. Longtime tKAPOW collaborator Tayva Young will be providing the lighting design. theatre KAPOWs production of Silent Sky which will celebrate the contributions of women by featuring an all female creative team (director, costume designer, set designer, and lighting designer) is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.Performances are April 26 and 27 and May 3 and 4 at 7:30pm and April 28 at 2:00 at the Derry Opera House in Derry, New Hampshire.
