The Who's Tommy is a rock musical bursting with energy, based on the iconic 1969 rock opera album of the same name by The Who. Pete Townshend, the band's guitarist and songwriter, penned both the music and lyrics for the musical, capturing the raw power and emotional depth of the original songs. Des McAnuff collaborated with Townshend on the book, or script, crafting a theatrical experience that expands upon the original story. The Who's Tommy premiered on Broadway in 1993 and became a critical and commercial success.

The story centers around Tommy Walker, a young boy who experiences a traumatic event that renders him deaf, mute, and blind. Withdrawn from the world, Tommy retreats into a world of his own imagination. The musical follows his journey as he encounters various colorful characters, some helpful, others manipulative, who shape his experiences. Through music and fantastical imagery, Tommy grapples with isolation, explores his hidden talents, and eventually finds a path to healing and connection.

The Who's Tommy won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, solidifying its place as a groundbreaking theatrical achievement. The musical's high-octane rock score, innovative staging, and exploration of complex themes continue to resonate with audiences, making it a captivating and enduring addition to the musical theatre canon.

Community Theatres Break The Mold With MAMMA MIA!

When the rights for a blockbuster Broadway show like Mamma Mia! came available, the race to be the first to secure them promised to be fierce. No one was more aware of that than Dexter Brigham, Director of Theatre Programs at Midland Center for the Arts which is located within 30 miles of two other well-established community theatres in mid-Michigan.

Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance Presents a Regional MAMMA MIA! Collaboration

The Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance announced today that will present a regional community theatre production of the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia! in September 2019. The production will be an opportunity for unprecedented cooperation among Midland Center for the Arts' Center Stage Theatre, Pit & Balcony Theatre, and Bay City Players.
