Originally performed at Chicago's Northlight theatre, Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five Years" is a musical that chronicles a five year relationship from begining to end. Kathy, an aspiring actress, begins the show at the end of the relationship, whereas Jamie, an up-and-coming writer, begins the show at the beginning of the relationship. The two meet up in the same time when they get married in the middle of the show, and they then continue in opposing timelines. Kathy ends the show right after the couple first meet, and Jamie ends the show after the couple gets divorced.
"The Last Five Years" uses time and memory in a different way to look at a relationship with the different viewpoints that are present. Seeing love travel in different directions brings a newfound beauty, as well as a new intuition to the story of a couple's downfall.
Now showing at Studio/Stage theater in Hollywood, Firefly Theatre Group produces Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five Years," starring Kate Hart and Jesse Durant. Tickets can be purchased at Fireflytheatregroup.com
Zachary Reeve Davidson is the Founding Artistic Director of Coin & Ghost, the group presenting Mama Mama Can’t You See, an explosive new play about human connection and the mythology of war written by ex-Marine Stan Mayer and Cecilia Fairchild. Davidson is directing and choreographing, opening November 10 at Studio/Stage. Since the new play tells the story of being involved in a war from the viewpoint of a Marine, I decided to speak with Zachary about its creation and relevancy to our world today in which wars seem to be constantly in the news.
After a successful, sold out run at the biggest Hollywood Fringe Festival yet, the Theatre Unleashed premiere of Tattered Capes by acclaimed playwright Gregory Crafts took home the Fringe Award for "Dance and Physical Theatre" Sunday night against a tough field that also included hit shows like Cirque du Giselle, Shakedown at the Dusty Spur, Mil Grus and Scarlett Fever. The win is TU's second in a row, after taking home the award for Best Comedy last year with A Very DIE HARD Christmas.
In 2013, Gregory Crafts wrote a short (but epic) superhero script about M-Pulse, the Eminence of Electromagnetism, to be mounted as part of the Theatre Unleashed show Play/Time. A couple years later, M-Pulse's story went to the inaugural Short + Sweet 10-Minute Play Festival in Hollywood and not long after, it expanded--along with M-Pulse's universe--as part of Serial Killers with Sacred Fools.
