The Frida of the title is, of course, the world-famous artist Frida Kahlo. The play begins on July 6, 1954, Fridas 47th birthday. She will die exactly one week later. The narrative will explore the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death. (There is an official account of her cause of death, but how did she die really?) This is not all, however. It is the story of a woman living as vibrantly as she can despite dwindling health and a world of pain.She attempts to continue painting. Partially anesthetized by a mixture of tequila and painkillers, she is visited by many lovers, male and female, singer Chavela Vargas, movie star Maria Felix, Communist politician Leon Trotsky, entertainer Josephine Baker, Cuban spy Teresa Proenza, photographer Tina Modotti, and Fridas husband, painter and muralist Diego Rivera. Some are physically present in her room, others are recreated and present in her vivid memory.The relationship between Frida and Diego is deeply complex. Diego is incapable of sexual monogamy, so much so that he practically pushes Frida into the arms of other lovers. Yet their emotional attachment to each other is surpassingly deep and a thing of wonder. The show includes several iconic songs of the period, performed live. Among them: Paloma Negra, La Llorona, Piensa en mi, Estas Son Las Mananitas, Maria Bonita and Una Cabeza.Written and directed by Odalys Nanin. Presented by Macha Theatre/ Films.

BWW Review: Odalys Nanin Produces Her Love Struck in Outstanding Benefit Performances
August 19, 2019Lovestruck/by Odalys Nanin and Marie Barrientos/directed by Odalys Nanin/Zephyr Theatre/CLOSED Benefit performances of this sparkling play Lovestruck by Odalys Nanin and Marie Barrientos were held August 16, 17 and 18 to sold out audiences at the Zephyr Theatre on Melrose in Hollywood. It is one of Macha Theatre's most popular plays alongside Garbo's Cuban Lover and Frida Stroke of Passion, one that is often requested. Perhaps because it is about romance, in this case between two women, a Cuban named Laura (Odalys Nanin) and the other American by the name of Rachel (Tricia Cruz). It is a winner in my book because it zips along with a serious look at the ups and downs of a relationship but never without a glorious sense of humor.

BWW Interview: Odalys Nanin Talks About the Success of her FRIDA play and Announces a Fundraiser
April 23, 2019Actress/director.producer Odalys Nanin presented her award-winning Frida: Stroke of Passion at Casa 0101 in February of this year to great acclaim. The play bowed originally in 2017 at the Macha Theatre and ran for 3 months. The Casa 0101 engagement was made possible by a grant from the Eastside Arts Initiative. Kahlo wrote the play and directs, produces and stars in it as Frida Kahlo. She will have a fundraiser in August and September so she and her team can continue their programming in 2020 and hopefully acquire a new space. In our interview she talks about her success and points to the difficulty in mounting good theatre in Los Angeles. How did your run of Frida go at Casa 101?
Josefina Lopez's CASA 0101 Theater Announces Update On CASA#350 Fundraising Campaign, Staff Updates And The 2019 Season
December 17, 2018Josefina Lopez, Founding Artistic Director of CASA 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights, CA announced today that her theater will stay open into 2019. Earlier in the year, in January 2018 she announced that her theater was in danger of closing its doors due to financial hardships. Lopez said today, "We are in a better place financially now in December 2018, than we were back at the beginning of the year. We still aren't out of the woods yet, but we are getting there.'
