No drama has enriched the German language more than Friedrich Schiller's "William Tell". This is largely due to the role the piece has played in German history. It has always served as a political reference point. But is it really the epitome of a "revolutionary drama"? Or does it only prove that all it takes to achieve real change is one person killing a tyrant?
Schiller presents three interweaving storylines. In the first, Tell refuses to bow to the hat at the marketplace which represents the brutal governor Gessler. To teach him a lesson, Gessler forces Tell to shoot an apple off the head of his son with an arrow. Although Tell achieves this impossible feat, he informs Gessler that he had a second arrow ready to kill him if he had missed. With that, their deadly enmity is sealed. In the second storyline, the Swiss - under the oppression of the Habsburg Empire - practice their revolt in secret. And finally, there's the highly contentious relationship between Berta von Bruneck and Ulrich von Rudenz, both of whom are aligned with rivalling political factions and whose love must stand the test of the dramatic turn of events.
Ever since it premiered in 1804, many have claimed the final word in interpreting this piece. Sometimes it served as affirmation of national sovereignty, and at others, as a reflection of contemporary social upheavals. Now our in-house director Jan Neumann will examine the significance of "William Tell" with regard to the political circumstances of today.
The premiere will take place during the "Week of Democracy" festival.
