Synopsis: Obie-winning playwright Marcus Gardley (The House That Will Not Stand) blends classic mythology, African-American history, and modern theatricality to create the poetic black odyssey. This vibrant reimagining of the Odysseus saga is set in modern-day Harlem, telling the epic tale of Ulysses Lincoln, a soldier facing the most daunting of voyages to reunite with his family. While fate may seem in control of Ulysses’ destiny, his ancestors and their buried history will help guide his journey home.

SEEKING:

[DEUS] Black, male-identifying, 45-70s. God of gods, god of the sky. Pronounced Day-oose. An ancestor. Doesn’t need to push. Lives in the language, luxuriates in the language. But when challenged there is wrath and a vitriol that is unparalleled. Can be loud and soft spoken. Singing chops. That is his superpower. His melodies created the world. Transformational. Plays many parts as well. Doubles as Eaton, a chef, and Super Fly Tireseas, the shagadelic prophet.

[PAW SIDIN] Black, male-identifying, 35-50s. God of sea, king of fish. An ancestor. Larger-than-life. Can be scary, powerful, and take up a lot of space. An Elegba type (trickster god). Cold. But also plays romantic and forlorn. Doubles as Naval Officer and John Suitor, who is Nella’s love interest, also Officer 1.

[AUNT TINA] Black femme/ woman/ non-binary, 45-60s. God/goddess of war. An ancestor. A bridge between the two worlds (Ancestors & Mortals). Embodies youth in interesting ways as they live in the ethereal world. This character is poly. Butch as a god, femme as human. They are all things and one. Has mighty comic chops. Clear distinction between them as god figure and aunt figure.

Transformational. Doubles as Scylla, the sea creature, and Calypso, Ulysses’ grandmother.

[ULYSSES LINCOLN] Black, male-identifying, 33. A vet from the Gulf War. A mortal. Loved, despite his hardness. Plays subtlety well. Gives the clear sense that he served in war.

[NELLA PELL] Black woman/ female-identifying, 33 . Resilient and heartbroken. Understands the nuance of growing up in a poor Black community. Wife to Ulysses.

[MALACHI] Black, male-identifying, and/or non-binary, 18+ to play 16. Queer. A young face. Child to Nella and Ulysses. Elegant; raised in a housing project but also has the specificity of a kid genius and smart ass. This character is same gender loving. Doubles as Poly’famous.

[ARTEZ SABINE] Black, male-identifying, 49. Grand Marshall of a Second Line. Has curves (plus sized). Doubles as Alabama Slim, The Soul Siren, The Alter Ego, and Officer 2. Southern accent (New Orleans or Texas or Georgian). Comedic sensibility.

[ALSENDRA SABINE] Black woman/ female-identifying, 40. Tough as nails Black woman that doesn’t delve into cliches. She represents the resilience of our aunties and grandmothers. She is pulled. Can read and throw shade like a grandmaster. A quiet storm. Wife to Artez. Doubles as Circe, the conductor; Carib’diss, sea creature.

BENEVOLENCE NAUSICCA SABINE, Black, non-binary, 18+ to play 10. Mysterious. Ethereal. Youthful. Comedic sensibility. Child of Alsendra and Artez. Doubles as an African Ancestor.
