Equity actors for roles in Zoetic Stage's 2022-23 Season (see breakdown).

Actors of all ethnicities and gender identifications are encouraged to attend.

If you are unable to attend the auditions on JUNE 29 and you wish to audition for NEXT TO NORMAL, please prepare a video submission of a brief contemporary pop/rock music theater piece. Email your headshot/resume and video submission link to auditions@zoeticstage.org .



PREPARATION

Please bring two physical copies of headshot & resume.

For NEXT TO NORMAL: Prepare a brief contemporary pop/rock music theater piece. An accompanist will be provided. Please note NEXT TO NORMAL will be holding in-person auditions ONLY on JUNE 29th and via video submission (see instructions in seeking).

For Plays: Prepare a comedic contemporary monologue and a dramatic contemporary monologue. Each piece should be two minutes in length.

MLIMA'S TALE, by Lynn Nottage

Florida Premiere

Synopsis: Mlima is a magnificent elephant trapped by the underground international ivory market. As he follows a trail littered by a history of greed, Mlima takes us on a journey through memory, fear, tradition, and the penumbra between want and need.

Seeking:

Mlima (Male identifying, ages 25-50, African, African American, or of African descent, strong physical condition, good at movement) An African bull elephant hunted for his tusks. Please note, the actor must be comfortable performing bare-chested.

Player 1: Any gender identity, 18+, any race and ethnicity, and ability. CAST.

Player 2: Any gender identity, 18+, any race and ethnicity, and ability. CAST.

Player 3: Any gender identity, 18+, any race and ethnicity, and ability.

The Players portray the following characters:

Rahman: A Somali poacher. Nervous and green.

Geedi: A Somali poacher. Experienced and proud, honorable in his own eyes.

Githinji: Chief of Police. Sees everything, and how it can most benefit him.

Wamwara: Regional Warden. Takes his responsibilities to heart.

Andrew Graves: Director of Wildlife. Wants to do the right thing, without having to try too hard.

Guoxi Fu: A Chinese diplomat. A collector. Happy to benefit from his position.

Hassan Abdulla: A Tanzanian trader. Skittish, but with an eye on the greatest profit.

Aziz Muhammed: A merchant. Comfortable and cautious.

Captain Ramaaker: An American ship captain. By-the-books, except under pressure.

Jim Baxter: Chief Mate. An opportunist.

Hua Huynh: A Vietnamese customs officer. Watchful and disinterested.

Thuy Fan: A Vietnamese trader. Easygoing. Enjoys winning.

Master Yee: A master ivory carver. An artist. Doesn’t ask questions.

Alice Ying: A Chinese woman. Nouveau riche. Eager to have the best and show it off.

Mr. Cheung: An ivory salesman. Has a flair for the big sale.

Hong Feng: A businessman. A little self-righteous.

Li Jun: A businessman. A gossip.

American Rhapsody, by Michael McKeever

(World Premiere)

Synopsis : Over the course of some sixty years - starting in 1969 and ending in 2032 - the Cabot family tries to keep up with the world as it evolves around them. Epic in scope, yet intimate by nature, American Rhapsody weaves the lives of its main characters through the ever changing landscape of the American zeitgeist as it speeds through the last half of the twentieth century, into the turbulence of today and well beyond: Civil unrest, the feminist movement, the greed of the 80s, the horrors of 911, the 2008 financial crisis, same-sex marriage, the COVID-19 Pandemic. As the family evolves into a new America, so does its cultural identity as members of other races and sexual orientation, marry into and redefine what the family thought it was.

Seeking:

Many of the characters of American Rhapsody age as the play progresses from 1968 thru 2032.

Franky Cabot: White, male identifying, 30’s. A poet/journalist. Originally from the middle of the country. Innocent and optimistic. Moves to New York, becomes more and more jaded as he ages over 60 years.


Nate Morris/Debra Trenchell: African American, female identifying. Nate Morris: A fierce, funny, and fearless lesbian bartender, horrified by what her country has become. Ages 60 years. Debra Trenchill: A smart and focused liberal politician.

Jenny Cabot/Sally: White, female identifying. Jenny Cabot: Rebellious and extremely smart. Quick and impatient. Way ahead of her time. Ages from teenager in 1968 to a successful lawyer, wife and mother in 2001. Sally: The loving, but politically ambivalent, wife of Nat Morris. CAST


Big Frank/Justin: White, male identifying, 50’s. Big Frank: Father of the Cabot family. Wants the world for his family, even as he quietly mourns his own failures. Justin: A fabulous middle-aged gay man, living with HIV.


Papa Frank/Terrence Ray: White, male identifying. Papa Frank: The beloved patriarch of the Cabot family. A civil rights activist and judge who dedicated his life to his many causes. Terrence Ray: A highly successful and fussy literary agent. CAST


Eleanor/Miss Cunningham: White, female identifying, 50’s. Eleanor. The soft spoken, hard working mother of the Cabot family. Quiet, but firm in her beliefs and resolve. Miss Cunningham: The no-nonsense Headmistress at Wellesley College.


Albert Bernal/Senator Mendez: Latino/Latinx, male identifying. Albert Bernal – A Colombian American Gulf War veteran. Giving and caring husband and father. Suffers from PTSD. Ages 60 years. Senator Mendez: A US Senator, committed to the Democratic Party.


Maddie Cabot-Bernal: Latina/Latinx, female identifying. Of white American and Colombian heritage. The future. Loves her family and her country. Starts as a child, ages 45 years.

NEXT TO NORMAL

Synopsis: Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love, sympathy and heart.

Seeking:

Diana: Female identifying, in between the ages of 45 and 55. Delusional, bipolar, and depressed. The sexiness of her yesterdays has only recently begun to soften. She is determined to make her family perfect but is tortured by a death in the family. Vocal range top: F#5. Vocal range bottom: G3. CAST

Gabe: Male identifying, early 20’s. Diana & Dan's son. Dashing, athletic, and bright. He is a playful man and everything a mother could imagine. Vocal range top: C5. Vocal range bottom: B2. CAST

Dan: Male Identifying, in between the ages of 45 and 55. Diana's husband. He is handsome and genuine. Though a constant in Diana's tumultuous life, he has grown tired and weary of her antics. Sings pop/rock. Vocal range top: B4. Vocal range bottom: Ab2.

Natalie: Female identifying, 16 years old. An accomplished pianist and hardworking student, her struggles are exacerbated by her mother's behavior. She greatly admires Henry. Sings pop/rock. Vocal range top: G5. Vocal range bottom: G3. BIPOC artists encouraged to audition.

Henry: Male identifying, 17 years old. Natalie's classmate. The all-around musician, philosopher, and slacker. He has an intoxicating capacity for sympathy and romance. Sings pop/rock. Vocal range top: B4. Vocal range bottom: G#2. BIPOC artists encouraged to audition.

Dr. Madden: Male identifying, between the ages of 35 and 45. Diana's handsome psychiatrist. Quite assured in his practice and considered somewhat of a rock star. Sings pop/rock. Vocal range top: A4. Vocal range bottom: A2. BIPOC artists encouraged to audition.

#Graced, by Vanessa Garcia (World Premiere)

Director: Sarah Hughes

Synopsis: Catherine is searching for something authentic as she embarks on a “Lewis-and-Clark-esque” trip across the United States sponsored by Monteverde Moonshine with her new lover and colleague, Lewis. Along the way, they pick up a wayward nun named Rosalie who has just gone through deep loss, meet a queer homeschooled teenager named Blake and rummage through the layers of migration and gender inequity that make up America. As Catherine travels, she comes to more questions than answers about “the real America,” her own identity and what authenticity even means anymore.

Seeking:

Catherine: Female identifying, Cuban-American, in her 30s. She can be confrontational, tough, a go-getter & extremely vulnerable. Catherine is spending months on the road searching for what it means to be American right now. She cares about the United States, she cares about history, and also, cares about her roots.

Lewis: Male identifying, Argentine/Argentinian-American, in his 30s. Lewis went to journalism school, believes in the ethics of journalism. He’s the son of a big liquor magnate He should be cool. Attractive. Fit. A catch.

Rosalie: Female identifying, Latina/Latinx-American, in her 30s. Rosalie is a wayward nun. She went into the convent pretty early and now, after experiencing a tragedy, has left her vocation behind and is ready to go wild and free into the world. She’s naïve, but wise in some ways, she can feel younger than her age, she’s fun and funny.

Blake: They/Them identifying, teenager questioning their sexuality. Their father has just left them (and their mother) and they’ve hit the road. Blake is funny and also rather earnest. CAST

Gianni: Male identifying, immigrant from Uruguay, 20’s to 30’s. Gianni is hardworking and has a chivito stand (Uruguayan sandwich stand) outside of Graceland. His father is illegally in the country. Gianni speaks with an accent. Handsome. Flirty.

Abbie/ Marty/ Nun: Various roles; a young teenage girl (Abbie), a psychiatrist (Marty, Blake’s Mom) and an older Nun. Fantastic comedic skills and timing. Please note that this track includes a number of characters, some of which may be of various genders and ages.

Requirement for proof of vaccination/negative test:

Everyone entering the audition venue (i.e., venue employees, Equity members, non[1]members, casting personnel, creatives, producers, musicians, COVID Safety Managers, etc.) will be required to undergo a symptom check and provide one of the following prior to entry into the venue:

o Proof of full vaccination. “Fully vaccinated,” as defined by the CDC, is more than 14 calendar days following receipt of a final dose of an FDA or World Health Organization authorized or approved vaccine.

o Proof of a negative PCR test result taken no earlier than 48 hours prior to entry into the audition venue.

(OR)

o Proof of two negative antigen test results (e.g., the first taken the night before and the second taken no less than 2 hours) prior to entry into the venue. Results of non-proctored at-home antigen tests will not be accepted.

Two-ply cloth face masks, surgical masks, singer’s masks and respirators (N95, KN95 or KF94) will be allowed for face coverings. Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable face coverings. Everyone in the holding room and audition room will always wear a face covering as described above, except for the actor when they are actively auditioning. The time spent unmasked should be as minimal as possible. Face coverings must be worn correctly (covering the nose and mouth). If the risk level for Miami County is trending upwards and may rise to High (Red) we will contact members with appointments at least 24 hours before the first audition appointment time to let them know there is a chance that the auditions may need to be postponed or cancelled. All members with appointments will be notified if the auditions must be postponed or cancelled.

We encourage members to prepare for their audition at home, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms. Additional information required in notice:

Holding/Audition room information:

The audition room is 800 square feet and can accommodate no more than 8 individuals at a time.

The holding room is 7,848 square feet and can accommodate no more than 218 individuals at a time.
