The Sensational Sea Mink-ettes are days away from their Homecoming half-time performance and the pressure is on. The student body, the administration, the alumni, their families — everyone is expecting perfection. As the big day creeps closer, the women must contend with flaring tempers, bodies pushed to their limits, and what it means to be a team in Vivian J.O. Barnes’ funny and surprising world premiere play.
All of these characters are members of an HBCU dance team.
SHANTEÈ - college senior and captain of the team, lives by the rule “excellence or nothing”, cares deeply about the team doing well, manipulative to get the best performance, she is not uncaring, but the care impulse is clouded by the drive to impress. As hard as she is on everyone else, she’s twice as hard on herself.
ALEYSE - college freshmen and newest member of the team, a legacy Sea Mink-ette (meaning her mother and grandmother were Sea-Mink-ettes) and feeling the pressure, less coordinated than her teammates, overwhelmed and searching for her place in the group.
MAYA - college senior and former captain, the smartest person in most rooms, always on point, she doesn’t give 100% to the team because she knows her 80% is sufficient, always focused on her individual goals, but ultimately, very kind.
KIERA (KEKE) - college junior, not an amazing dancer but pretty good, often distracted and spacing out, a little quirky but there’s some darkness lurking underneath it.
RACQUEL (ROCKY) - college sophomore and bestie to Gabby, larger than life, aspiring singer/rapper, cares about her image and being seen, has no patience for Shanteè's strictness but still cares deeply about being excellent.
GABBY - college sophomore and bestie to Raquel, infatuated with her new boyfriend, has a big heart and is accepting, also has no patience for Shanteeè.
DIONNE (can double) - a kindred soul to Rocky, eccentric, believes Shanteé is more of tyrant than a captain
CHANTAL (can double) - keeps to herself, private, has a respect for Shanteè, willing to call things how she sees it making her judgmental or skeptical of others.
NIKKI (can double) - open and free with her body, more combative than her teammates and willing to stand up for herself, and often being judged by other teammates.

PISHIMONI (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Choton’s aunt, his father’s sister. Born and raised in Kolkata, Bangla is her primary language. Speaking English exhausts her.
PISHE (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Pishimoni’s husband, Choton’s uncle, also born and raised in Kolkata.
SHOU (THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST) Early to mid-twenties, identifies as kothi, a gender category native to the Indian subcontinent.
