BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.

[BUDDY HOLLY] white, male, early 20s. Singer/Songwriter from Lubbock, TX. Passionate to the point of stubborn about music. Starts naïve and nerdy, grows in confidence to become a true rock ‘n roll star. Plays GUITAR and sings extremely well. Able to comfortably solo on electric guitar.

[JERRY ALLISON + BELMONT] white, early 20s, male. Good looking drummer from Lubbock, Texas with cheeky humor. Play drums at advanced level - please specify additional instrumental abilities.

[JOE B. MAUDLIN + BELMONT] white, early 20s, male. Serious character with musical ability from Lubbock, Texas. Plays upright Bass at advanced level - please specify additional instrumental abilities.

[HIPOCKETS DUNCAN + CLEAR LAKE EMCEE] white, mid 30s to early 50s, male. An exuberant hometown radio DJ from Lubbock, Texas, with an air of authority and a keen sense of humor. Able to sing - instrumental ability is a plus but NOT required for this role.

[MARIA ELENA] Latina, 20s, female. Well educated, with an innocent quality. Sings and plays one of the following instruments at a solid level: sax, trumpet, trombone, violin, piano, guitar, bass, drums. Will double as ENSEMBLE.

[NORMAN PETTY + OTHERS] white, 40s, male. A record producer from Clovis, New Mexico, with a business-like manner and a love of making records. Instrumental ability (particularly country fiddle or guitar family) is a plus but NOT required for this role. Will double as ENSEMBLE, including HAYRIDER.

[THE BIG BOPPER + OTHERS] white, 20s-30s, male. Large physical presence with a distinctively resonant voice and sense of humor. Acoustic guitar abilities a plus, but not critical. May also double as ENGLISH DJ + DECCA PRODUCER.

[RITCHIE VALENS] Latino, early 20s, male. Handsome, with serious charisma and the ability to hold the stage on his own. Best known for his 1958 hit “La Bamba.” Able to sing - instrumental ability a plus but not required. Will doubles as ENSEMBLE.

[VI PETTY] any ethnicity, 30s-40s, female. The wife of Norman Petty with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor. Plays piano at a strong level.

[MALE APOLLO PERFORMER + OTHERS] Black, mid 20s-30s, male. Instrumentalist a MAJOR plus (ideally sax, harmonica, or a brass instrument - trumpet, trombone, etc.) - a good singer, with movement abilities. Will double as ENSEMBLE.

[FEMALE APOLLO PERFORMER + OTHERS] Black, mid 20s-30s, female. Instrumental ability of any sort a plus - a singer with a big voice (sings “Shout”) and movement abilities. Will double as ENSEMBLE.

[MURRAY DEUTCH + OTHERS] white, 40s, male. Longtime music industry executive who helps propel Buddy Holly and the Crickets to stardom. Very New York. Sings and will is an instrumentalist, playing one of the following instruments at a solid level: sax, trumpet, trombone, violin, piano, guitar, bass, drums. Will double as ENSEMBLE.

[TOMMY ALLSUP + OTHERS] white, early 20s, male. Plays electric guitar at an advanced level. Will double as ENSEMBLE.

[MARY LOU SOKOLOF/SHIRLEY/ENSEMBLE] any ethnicity, 20s-30s, female. Strong ensemble singer and dancer. Instrumental ability a major plus.

[JACK DAW + OTHERS] any ethnicity, 20s-30s, male. Strong ensemble singer and dancer. Instrumental ability a major plus (particularly sax, trumpet, trombone, violin, piano, guitar, bass, drums.)

[LEGIONNAIRE] any ethnicity, late 30s-early 50s, male. A stickler for rules and law, he first appears as an assertive American Legionnaire monitoring the speech and debate. Later, he becomes Heidi’s friend and assistant. A positive, genuine presence.

[COSMO BROWN] any ethnicity, early 30s-40s, male. Akin to Don’s little brother. A playful pianist who plays on set for silent films. Don’s best friend and previous dance partner. A strong tapper.

[LINA LAMONT] any ethnicity, 30s-40s, female. A dim-witted silent film star who possesses a theatrical personality and less than pleasant voice. She is Don’s regular co-star.

[DON LOCKWOOD] any ethnicity, 30s-late 40s, male. A charming Hollywood actor who is Lina’s regular co-star and Cosmo’s best friend. A strong tapper.

[R.F. SIMPSON] any ethnicity, 50s-60s, male. A successful film producer who leads the way in creating a new movie musical.

[ROSCOE DEXTER] any ethnicity, 40s, male. A famous and theatrical film director who works with Lina and Don. A true artist.

[KATHY SELDEN] any ethnicity, late 20s-early 30s, female. A genuinely talented actress who performs as Lina’s speaking/singing voice and falls in love with Don. A strong tapper.

[DORA BAILEY] any ethnicity, 30s-40s, female. A prying and powerful gossip columnist and radio announcer. Will likely double as other roles.

[ZELDA ZANDERS] any ethnicity, late 20s-early 30s, female. A flapper socialite and actress who is on her ninth marriage. She is a friend and informant to Lina. Will likely double as other roles.

[ROD] any ethnicity, early 50s-60s, male. An excitable film agent who borders on manic and works under Simpson. Will likely double as other roles.

[ENSEMBLE TENOR] any ethnicity, 20s, strong lyric tenor. Excellent singer who dances well. Will likely double as other roles.

[ENSEMBLE ROLES] any ethnicity, 18+, all gender identities. Versatile singer/dancers (particularly tap) to play a variety of roles.

THE PORCH ON WINDY HILL

PLEASE NOTE: ALL ROLES IN THE PORCH ON WINDY HILL ARE CAST AT THE PRESENT TIME.

MIRA- THIS ROLE IS CAST. Bi-racial Korean/Caucasian, 26, female. An intelligent and ebullient young woman whose life has been interrupted by the pandemic. She plays Classical violin. Because of her boyfriend, Beckett’s, influence and enthusiasm, she has recently begun to play Old Time American fiddle music again, as she did as a young girl in North Carolina.

BECKETT- THIS ROLE IS CAST. white, 26, male. A kind and quirky young man from New England who has the simultaneous air of being ahead of his time as well as being from a time before his own. His excitement for American Folk Music and his academic research have brought them to Windy Hill, North Carolina. He is proficient on mandolin and guitar and plays this style of music very well.

EDGAR- THIS ROLE IS CAST. white, 75, male. A taciturn and circumspect widower who has lived the last eighteen years alone near Windy Hill. He is a Vietnam veteran, an electrician by trade and Mira’s grandfather. He has been, for all his life, a player of Traditional, Old Time and Bluegrass music, and when he gets going, the sparkling performer and storyteller shines through. He plays banjo, guitar, dulcimer and harmonica.
