BREAKDOWN

Warehouse Theatre 2024-25 Season

MS HOLMES AND MS WATSON, APT 2B

Playwright: Kate Hamill

Director: Jay Briggs

First Rehearsal: August 20, 2024

Run: September 13-October 6, 2024

SYNOPSIS: An irreverent, darkly comic, modern take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuth and sidekick, this fast-paced romp re-examines the world’s most famous detective story with an exciting twist. Oddball female roommates Sherlock Holmes & Joan Watson join forces to emerge from pandemic fog as a deeply codependent, quasi-dysfunctional Odd Couple adventure duo—solving mysteries and kicking butts, until they come face to face with a villain who seems to have all the answers.

SEEKING:

SHERLOCK HOLMES: FEMALE, 30s – 40s. A once-in-a-generation genius. Eccentric. Focused, to a fault. Can be less-than-sensitive. Always playing psychological 3-D chess; operating on a totally different level than civilians. Like many geniuses, has a megalomaniac streak. Gets bored easily; likes applause; sometimes accused of being unfeeling. LOVES costumes and drama.

DR. JOAN WATSON: FEMALE, 30s – 40s. American. Formerly type-A high-achiever. Recently divorced; struggling to find herself, feels broken. Reflexively defensive. Once had great bedside manner. Sometimes accused of being a loser; is not a loser. Wry. Smart. Not great around blood.

IRENE ADLER / MRS. HUDSON / MRS. DREBBER: FEMALE, 20s – 40s. Irene Adler: a whip-smart, super-charming sex worker finding success at the highest levels. Always playing psychological 3-D chess; operating on a totally different level than civilians. Has incredible charm, confidence, and wit, and she knows it—uses it without mercy. You may want to be Irene, or you may want to be with Irene; but you can’t ignore her. Mrs. Hudson: Holmes & Watson’s long-suffering landlady. Mrs. Drebber: seemingly an ordinary housewife. Somebody you would be very wise not to underestimate.

MORIARTY / LESTRADE / ELLIOT MONK: MALE, 30s – 50s. Moriarty: a criminal so great you’ve never heard of him. A master blackmailer; knows just when to play his cards. Always playing psychological 3-D chess; operating on a different level than civilians. Wears many masks. A professional. Amoral, but you’d like him. Lestrade: an inspector new to his position at Scotland Yard. Not very imaginative. Often says the wrong thing. Elliot Monk: an amoral tech billionaire from Texas.

MISERY

Playwright: William Goldman

Adapted from Novel: Stephen King

Director: Jess Chayes

First Rehearsal: November 12, 2024

Run: December 6-29, 2024

SYNOPSIS: Successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon is rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes. While Paul is convalescing in her secluded home, Annie reads his latest book and becomes enraged when she discovers the author has killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain. Annie forces Paul to write a new Misery novel, and he quickly realizes Annie has no intention of letting him go anywhere. The irate Annie has Paul writing as if his life depends on it, and it does.

SEEKING:

ANNIE WILKES: FEMALE, 35+. Paul Sheldon’s #1 Fan. She is like no one else on this planet. Always in a cardigan. There is a brightness and a cleverness that masks a darkness underneath. She is immensely passionate about what she loves, incredibly quick on her feet, and very, very observant. She would have made an incredible detective.

PAUL SHELDON: MALE, 40+. A famed romance writer who has recently published the “last” book of his most popular series and has just finished his new, more experimental book. A bit predictable in his process. Determined and creative, has a passion for breaking out of previous molds. Not exactly what you would expect a writer of historical fiction to look or act like.

SHERIFF BUSTER: MALE, 20-70. Sheriff of a nearby town, Buster is a good cop who trusts his instincts. Not a lot of crime in the area, especially when the weather gets bad, but he has strong ties to the area and no time for nonsense.

JANE ANGER

Playwright: Talene Monahon

Director: Anne Kelly Tromsness

First Rehearsal: January 7, 2025

Run: January 31-February 16, 2025

SYNOPSIS: It’s 1606. William Shakespeare is plagued with writer’s block. And also the actual plague, as he is holed up with his apprentice Francis without anything to do and no motivation to write. Through the window climbs Jane Anger, a writer with a dream to change history. While Jane convinces Shakespeare to write KING LEAR, Anne Hathaway (his wife, not the one from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) arrives, having missed her husband for the past 10 years. Constricted to one room, what creativity and conflict will explode between these four?

SEEKING:

JANE ANGER: FEMALE, 20s-30s. A cunning woman. Once met the queen, who gave her a book so she would not grow up to be a whore. She still did, but also did a bunch of other things that are much more important. In fact, right now she’s trying to get a new pamphlet published, but is having issues because of her race, her gender, and the plague. A phenomenal improvisor and a human who gets what she wants without letting you know what she wants.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: MALE, 40s. The Voice of All People! An important writer, very important writer, but more importantly, a writer who is facing another plague. The pressure of having to write important plays during plagues while having writer's block is hard you guys. He has plenty of ideas, as long as those ideas come from someone else's ideas. I’d say he’s full of himself, but he has every right to be. He’s IMPORTANT. And he’d like you to KNOW THAT.

FRANCIS SIR: ANY GENDER, ANY AGE. Age unclear. Everything Unclear. Shakespeare’s peasant companion, stuck in a room with him during a plague. Luckily Francis is willing and able to do whatever it takes to help. He/she/They is/are shocked to find out that, in his/her/their estimation, he’s/she’s/they’re a pretty good actor, and is enthusiastic about the process of discovery in all areas of life. You know, like a teenager.

ANNE HATHAWAY: FEMALE, 20s-30s. “Will they ever stop hating on Anne Hathaway?” Married to William, Anne is very earnest. This infuriates Shakespeare. She comes from money, and rarely sees her husband, who she loves. She’s keen on bringing up the fact that she hasn’t seen him in a long time but also thinks this is probably most likely all her fault. In fact, she apologizes a lot. All the time. She’s sorry that she apologized again just now.

KING JAMES

Playwright: Rajiv Joseph

Director: Ahsha Daniels

First Rehearsal: March 22, 2025

Run: April 4-20, 2025

SYNOPSIS: “King” LeBron James’s years playing in Cleveland bring promise, prosperity, and renewal to a city in desperate need of all three. His tenure also unites Shawn and Matt in an unlikely bond forged by fandom. Over twelve years, from LeBron’s rookie season to an NBA Championship, the men navigate their turbulent friendship through their shared love of basketball—and the endless amiable arguments that erupt from that love. A clever comedy, King James is an intimate exploration of the place that sports occupy in our lives and relationships.

SEEKING:

SHAWN: MALE, BLACK, AGES 21, 27, 31, 33. A writer with a strong desire to please everyone he encounters. Recently sold a story and is taking that money to buy season tickets to the Cavs to make up for the one missed game from his childhood. Loves basketball, develops a close friendship with Matt’s parents, much to the chagrin of Matt.

MATT: MALE, WHITE, AGES 21, 27, 31, 33. Trying to find his way, rebelling against his parents who own an eclectic shop downtown, he has made some bad financial decisions that cause him to have to sell his parents season tickets. He’s been sitting in the same seats to watch Cavs games since he was 6. Basketball is his life. A generous soul, but a complicated one.

ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

Adapted from Playwright: Henrik Ibsen

Director: Matthew Earnest

First Rehearsal: May 6, 2025

Run: May 30-June 22, 2025

SYNOPSIS: A small-town doctor considers himself a proud, upstanding member of his close-knit community. When he discovers a catastrophe that risks the lives and well-being of everyone in town, he raises the alarm. But he is shaken to his core when those in power, including his own brother, not only try to silence him—they try to destroy him.

SEEKING:

DR. THOMAS STOCKMANN: MALE, 30s-40s. Highly intelligent and curious. He’s seen more of the world than most of his small town. Unafraid of authority and can lack self-awareness. Can be impulsive. His highs are high and his lows are low.

PETER STOCKMANN: MALE, 30s-50s. The Mayor, Chief of Police, Chairman of the Board at the Baths. The authority of his small town. Cares for his brother but has little patience for the way his brother moves through the world. Aware of how the world perceives him. A workaholic. Unmarried. Anxious.

MRS. STOCKMANN: FEMALE, 30s-40s. Dr. Thomas Stockmann’s wife. Cares deeply for her husband and family and devotes herself to supporting them. Highly intelligent. Self-aware and conscious of the limitations of the 19th century home life. Sensitive to her husband’s highs and lows and deliberate in her tactics to guide him.

PETRA STOCKMANN: FEMALE, 20s. A teacher. Fiercely intelligent. Idolizes her father. Has a strong moral center. Rejects traditional femininity and gender norms for a 19th century woman. Incandescent.

MORTEN KIIL: MALE, 50s-80s. Mrs. Stockmann’s stepfather. A master tanner. Rich but allows his family to think he’s barely scraping by. Mischievous with an edge to him. Does not take well to insults or slights. Misanthropic.

HOVSTAD: ANY GENDER, 20s-40s. Editor of the town’s leftist newspaper. Considers himself/herself/themselves and (loudly) professes to be a revolutionary but falters when his/her/their ideals are put to the test.

BILLING: ANY GENDER, 20s-30s. An assistant at the leftist newspaper. Considers himself/herself/themselves to be a radical and condemns the government but is also politically ambitious.

CAPTAIN HORSTER: MALE, 20s. A ship captain. Has little interest in local politics. A loner. Has a strong moral compass. Loyal. Maybe the most intelligent of them all though he has the least formal education.

ASLASKAN: MALE, 40s-80s. Prints the leftist newspaper which gives him a degree of editorial control. Chairman of the homeowner’s association and represents the town’s small business class. A proud and loud member of The Temperance Society. He loves moderation and abhors conflict.
