TWELFTH NIGHT

Playwright: William Shakespeare

Director: Andrew Scoville

First rehearsal: August 15, 2023

Run: September 8-24, 2023

Synopsis: Twins are separated in a shipwreck and forced to fend for themselves in a strange land. The first twin, Viola, while in disguise, falls in love with Orsino, who dotes on Olivia, who falls for Viola but is idolized by Malvolio. Enter Sebastian, who is the spitting image of his twin sister.

Characters:

TRACK #1 (ORSINO & ANDREW), MALE, 30s – 40s: Orsino is melancholy, brooding, and blinded by his passion for being in Love. So much so, that he isn’t really in love with anyone in particular. Rather, he is in love with Love. This changes as he grows more and more attracted to Cesario. Andrew is a delightful Innocent; blithe and joyously unaware. He is an emblematic character representing the “upper class twit.” He is desperate for companionship and loyal to a fault. In Shakespeare’s world he is a Fool.

TRACK #2 (SEBASTIAN, CURIO, SAILOR), MALE, 20s: Sebastian is equal parts Viola and himself just as she is equal parts Sebastian and herself. In him, we see a paragon of duty and honor, passion and loyalty. He is heroic but with a poet’s heart. Curio is fastidious and eager to be promoted. He serves Orsino with an eye on becoming Orsino. The sailor…says nothing.

TRACK #3 (TOBY, VALENTINE), ANY GENDER, 40s-60s: Sir Toby is the wayward Uncle who comes just short of Falstaff in his love of merriment, mirth, and wine. Unlike Falstaff, Toby is more rooted in a morose resentment and anger over how their life has turned out. At times, they are embarrassed and humiliated to be under their niece’s charge and charity. Toby is a Checkhov uncle or Zorba. Like Dionysus or Bacchas, they are Mischief intoxicated. Valentine is the quiet, older servant who has seen it all before.

TRACK #4 (VIOLA), ANY GENDER, 20s: Viola is an adventurer; tempted by wanderlust. They are terrified but also thrilled by their predicament. As their name suggests they are passionate and fueled by Romantic Love. They are bright, supremely intelligent and observant. They are set free (in some way) by her situation and disguise. It suits them and that frightens and delights them. Viola is strong but not at all a loner; they follow their heart and their heart is racing toward Orsino.

TRACK #5 (MALVOLIO, ANTONIO), ANY GENDER, 30s-50s: Malvolio, as the name suggests, is a bitter (even venomous) individual. But they aren’t so far gone that there isn’t a bit of passion and vulnerability left. They are driven by lust and ambition, and they scorn anyone they feel is beneath them, but they are also genuinely loyal. They are loyal to order and to rules and to Olivia. They are hyper-protective of her; to the point of idolatry. Malvolio is the alien, the puritan of the new world navigating the hedonistic popery of the old. We want to hate them but we know they will ultimately triumph. “I’ll be revenged on the whole pack of you.” Antonio is very much the loyal and faithful “Beagle” that Toby refers to. An emblematic character who casts their fate and fortune on Sebastian. Antonio is a pirate, deadly, rugged, and oddly overprotective; a devoted friend who is perhaps smitten by- and in love with- Sebastian. (Not unlike Merchant’s Antonio).

TRACK #6 (FABIAN, SAILOR, ATTENDANT), ANY GENDER, 30s: Famous for seemingly coming out of nowhere, Fabian is a jovial, puckish, likeable ne’er-do-well. I think they are the younger version of Feste. They arrive in time to fulfill, perhaps, the tasks that Feste no longer desires to perform. They are always good for a joke or a prank or for one too many. For this go round, it would help if they could sing.

TRACK #7 (MARIA, 1ST OFFICER), FEMALE, 30s-50s: Maria is so much more than “my lady’s maid.” She is wry, funny, wickedly observant, loyal, tenacious, scrappy and wanton. She is sturdy and clear sighted in everything–except when it comes to Toby. She is constantly disheveled but manages to look stunning and brilliant. The First Officer is a bit of a Dogberry and Keystone Cop.

TRACK #8 (FESTE, CAPTAIN, PRIEST), ANY GENDER, 50s: Feste is still called “Fool” by the Illyrians but they have long since become a bitter Wit. They are fed up with foolery; they have seen too much out there in the wars. They’ve come home to die. The ghosts of Olivia’s family are always with Feste and demand continued loyalty to Olivia and Toby. Feste’s last task is to see them both through this particular storm. They call upon what’s left of their foolish days, but it all gets washed in the melancholy and fatigue and nostalgia. Their songs are sad, their jokes are mean, their demeanor is pure pessimism. The Captain is Feste. The Priest is Feste’s alter-ego?

TRACK #9 (OLIVIA, 2ND OFFICER), FEMALE, 20s-30s: As the name suggests, Olivia is somber, velvet and grief personified. In a way, she is like Orsino: in love with the idea of grief and the romance of sorrow. She is a prime example of the Sublime. Olivia is, like Orsino and the other Illyrians, stuck where she’s standing, inert, unable to move forward. Her passion and her life force are hibernating until Cesario and Sebastian arrive. Then, she thaws; a statue or monument come to life; tall and fine and elegant beyond description. The 2nd Officer is a sidekick. Yogi’s Boo Boo or Fred’s Barney.

ODD

Playwright: Cammi Stilwell

Director: Caroline Jane Davis

WORLD PREMIERE

First rehearsal: November 7, 2023

Run: December 1-17, 2023

Synopsis: Margot and Phoebe are roommates and best friends who are as similar as they are different (Some would say that they’re an…odd couple.) Phoebe is a flaky free spirit who feels her emotions deeply and frequently, while Margot is a workaholic who would rather get a root canal than talk about her problems. When Margot's professional and personal lives begin to teeter, Phoebe sees this as the perfect opportunity to prove she can take care of her best friend... by throwing a girl's night the same night as Margot's important work dinner. Dealing with exes, pillow forts, board games, nosebleeds, and cheap wine, the two are forced to navigate not only the most uncomfortable dinner party of their lives, but also their friendship.

Characters:

MARGOT, FEMALE, Mid-20s: Tries very hard to seem like she has it all together. When something goes wrong she suppresses it. Has just discovered that she was the affair for her now-married ex girlfriend and is going to Not Think About It Actually. Very type A, trying to be the quintessential girl boss. Would do anything for Phoebe - including indulging her ridiculous shenanigans.

PHOEBE, FEMALE, Mid-20s: Incredibly charming and prone to chronic fuckups. She means well and tries hard, but usually she manages to mess things up worse than if she had ignored them. Would do anything for Margot - fortunately for Margot, this includes fixing the problems Phoebe herself causes.

LIZA, FEMALE, Mid-30s: Margot's ex-girlfriend and coworker. Liza is perfect - perfect husband, perfect job, perfect life. Won't let Margot steal her perfect promotion without a fight.

HANNAH, FEMALE, Mid-20s: The nice girl who lives upstairs. Has a massive crush on Margot, and is ready to take the next step in their relationship - but is Margot?

JOHN, MALE, WHITE, 50s: Margot’s boss. Charming, charismatic, and more than a bit conservative.

THE LEHMAN TRILOGY

Playwright: Stefano Massini

Adaptation: Ben Power

Director: Jay Briggs

First rehearsal: January 9, 2024

Run: February 2-18, 2024

Synopsis: On a cold September morning in 1844, a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers, and an American epic begins. 163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, triggering the largest financial crisis in history.

ALL ROLES ARE PRE-CAST.

Characters:

HENRY LEHMAN, MALE, ANY AGE: The first brother to arrive, the head.

EMANUEL LEHMAN, MALE, ANY AGE: The second brother to arrive, the arm.

MAYER LEHMAN, MALE, ANY AGE: The youngest and third to arrive. He’s what’s needed so the arm doesn’t crush the head and the head doesn’t humiliate the arm.

TROUBLE IN MIND

Playwright: Alice Childress

Director: TBD

First rehearsal: March 5, 2024

Run: March 29-April 14, 2024

Synopsis: Set during rehearsals for a major Broadway production of a new play, TROUBLE IN MIND illuminates the inner life of a Black actress struggling with her career. Alice Childress’s 1955 play is a funny, moving, and heartbreaking look at racism, identity, and ego in the high-stakes world of theatre.

Characters:

WILETTA MAYER, FEMALE, BLACK, 35-55: An actress, attractive and expansive in personality. A singer who wants it all and is willing to fight the world for it.

HENRY, MALE, WHITE, 50+: The doorman at the theater. Truly loves the art and the building. Way back in the day he was the electrician, and he remembers Wiletta.

JOHN NEVINS, MALE, BLACK, 20s: An actor, trying to be self-assured but he is new and fighting his enthusiasm. Has specific ideas of how to function in the rehearsal room.

MILLIE DAVIS, FEMALE, BLACK, 30s: Confident and wants more despite getting cast as younger roles.

JUDY SEARS, FEMALE, WHITE, 20s: Nervous. It’s her first play. She is not confident in herself and tries on sophistication that can’t go below the surface.

SHELDON FORRESTER, MALE, BLACK, 50+: A character actor from the old school.

AL MANNERS, MALE, WHITE, 40s: The director. A bundle of energy, considerate, and understanding. A product of Hollywood. Cares deeply about his vision of the work and how to get it done.

EDDIE FENTON, MALE, WHITE, 20s-30s: The stage manager. Eager and quick.

BILL O’WRAY, MALE, WHITE, 30s-50s: Character actor, strong when he’s performing, but self conscious when he is not. Has a habit of negatively shaking his head even though nothing is wrong.

ASSASSINS

Music & Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim

Book: John Weidman

Director: Andrew Scoville

First rehearsal: April 30, 2024

Run: May 31-June 23, 2024

Synopsis: Evoking a fraternity of Presidential assassins and would-be assassins across a hundred years of our history (including John Wilkes Booth, Lynette ‘Squeaky’ Fromme, John Hinckley, and Lee Harvey Oswald). Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman examine success, failure, and the questionable drive for power and celebrity in American society. The result is an unusually imaginative and utterly idiosyncratic entertainment composed equally of insight, pleasure, and provocation. ASSASSINS is an important and permanent addition to the American stage.
