Seeking
One character man and two singers, male and female.
Preparation
Ira: 2-1/2 minute dramatic monologue
Crooner & Chanteuse: 16 bars each of a ballad and an up tune. (An accompanist will be provided)

Performance Schedule: Thursdays & Fridays 8:00, Saturdays 3:00 & 8:00, Sundays 2:00.

Breakdown
This is a play about a man, Ira Gershwin, whose job happened to be writing words for songs. It is important to him that the audience understand the substance and craft that led to the creation of the Great American Songbook. The singers and the band are his “friends” as he uses songs and stories to tell the tale of his work, his brother, and his associates. This play is being supported and promoted by the estate of Ira Gershwin.
IRA GERSHWIN – male, open age from 40s to 70s, Caucasian.
In public, Ira Gershwin was self-effacing and shy. Among family and trusted friends he became more comfortable and outgoing. The actor playing Ira should be conversational rather than presentational, but without ever losing his urgency in telling the story of his life’s work. The actor portraying Ira must possess the maturity and skill to portray Ira looking back through all phases of his life, and be able to project the intelligence, warmth and wit of this very intelligent, warm and witty man. It is very important that Ira come off as likeable and even endearing. The actor should be able to project at least subliminally as a Jew, which Ira was. The actor should be able to sing his very important songs in a way that is moving, but not in the fashion of any kind of professional singer. He has all the dialogue in the show.
THE CROONER – male, (open age – 30’s-50’s)
THE CHANTEUSE – female, (open age – 30’s-50’s).
Performers of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to attend.
**The two singers need to be singers first and foremost -strong jazz, American songbook, opera - and actors only secondarily. Both roles require a wide versatility of singing style. There are 26 amazing songs, all written by Ira Gershwin with composers George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Vernon Duke.
