THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES
By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, adapted by Steven Canny and John Nicholson
Directed by Stephen Russell

General Note: This is an ensemble piece if there ever was one and the ability to play well with others is almost more important than any other requirement.

***Must be adept at playing multiple characters and making each one clear and distinct without aid of costume or make-up changes. Facility with multiple British dialects is a must. Also must have excellent comic timing and an ability to move well.***

THE TRIALS OF GERTRUDE MOODY:

Gertrude Moody.
Female, 35 – 55. Any ethnicity.
A parrot who transforms into a woman. Undeniably attractive, naturally powerful, stylish and inquisitive with no need for shame or fear, she is the epitome of what every woman would want to be. Yet her inner sadness is centuries old, trapped in an ironic game of never-ending despair. Comic timing is essential. Like if Sandra Bullock was playing Meryl Streep (in The Devil Wears Prada) while channeling Tina Fey. Bonus points for knowledge of French.

Dorothéa.
Female, 30 – 50. Any ethnicity.
Gertrude’s childhood friend. Somewhat androgenous, dryly comic, incredibly versatile and deliciously subversive, she is capable of being innocent and guilty at the same time. Think love child of Linda Hunt and Amy Poehl

Arthur.
Male, 30 – 50. Any ethnicity.
Gertrude’s love interest. A dashing scientist, earnest and handsome, Arthur is a bookish romantic hero with not much insight. Yet

=====

I AM A CAMERA:

Christopher Isherwood:
Late 20s, poor, struggling novelist living in Berlin during late 30's.

Fraulein Schneider:
Middle class, bosomy, German landlady in her 50’s.

Fritz Wendel:
Mid 20s business man struggling to stay afloat. Good friend to Sally and Christopher.

Natalie Landaver:
Early 20s, educated daughter of a very successful business family. Broad minded in an intellectual sort of way.

Clive Mortimer:
Late 20s to early 30s, Englishman. He lives on constant vacation.

Mrs. Walson-Courtneidge:
Sally's mother. Late 40's/early 50's. Woman of nerves and self-pity.

THE FABULOUS LIPITONES:

PHIL RIZZARDI.
Male, early to mid-50s. Caucasian.
Owner of “Phil’s Eternally Fit Gym & Tanning Salon”. A middle-aged cock-of-the-walk, whose macho ways are worn on his sleeve. Phil works out regularly to push back the onslaught of time, although there are visible signs he’s losing the battle. He also deplores those without the discipline to take care of themselves. He holds old-fashioned values dear, his politics veering sharply to the right. Highly opinionated (“blowhard” works, too), Phil’s aware of all the forces at work undermining this once-great country of ours. The times they are a changing and he’s dug in his heels about most of it. Deep down, he may be fearful that what is new and different will not include him. Often the source of conflict in the quartet, for awhile now he’s believed that his singing talents place him above the dated Barbershop style. Parts Archie Bunker, Willie Loman, and Louie DePalma, his ego drives him until he’s forced to think otherwise.

WALLY SMITH.
Male, early to mid-50s. Caucasian.
Pharmacist who’s socially awkward, a bit wonky, but has found his “home” singing since high school with The Fabulous Lipitones. Hasn’t had a date with a woman in years, and, now in middle age, finds himself living with his mother. That’s why he clings to the idea of keeping this quartet together--it gives him “status” in this small town, a peer group, and meaning to his limited life. A constant object of Phil Rizzardi’s teasing, Wally has secretly begun to internet date on a site devoted to pharmacists: White Coat Love. But, he’s reluctant to share all personal information with his singing partners, since there’s much to be embarrassed or teased about. For him, achieving national recognition with the Lipitones could solve all his problems. Recently being chosen as “The One To Watch” in Pharmacist’s Monthly has given Wally a small taste of the fulfillment fame can bring. Think Wally Shawn meets Matthew Broderick.

HOWARD DUNPHY.
Male, early to mid-50s. Caucasian.
Chief accountant at the Purina Dogfood Plant on the outskirts of town. A kind, gentle, and big-hearted man, Howard’s greatest shortcoming is his complete paralysis when it comes to making decisions, especially important ones. You’ll find him in the dictionary under “Waffler”, a quality that drives the other Lipitones crazy. Branding Howard a milquetoast is a bit harsh, but not far off. Indicative of his soft backbone is the fact that his wife left him for an Encyclopedia salesman, only to have Howard take her back in when he got word she was “ill”—which many in town know to be faked and a manipulation. Though cuckolded, Howard remains a blindly devoted husband. Think Jimmy Stewart meets Robert Joy.

“BOB” MATI DAS.
Male, early 20s to 30s. From India or Neighboring Regions.
Immigrated to America one year ago, now works as a mechanic at Ralph’s Gas-n-Get Garage. Very enthused to be in America and experience the culture, especially the music which he’s loved from afar. Born to Sikhs, Bob’s personality and outlook embody traditions of love, respect of all others, and pacifism. But, it’s a mistake to think of him as pious. Instead, he’s highly self-aware and quick-witted. To ease tensions, especially when he’s viewed as “the other”, Bob will always be the first to crack a joke. And, compared to the other Lipitones, he’s hip and totally current with today’s culture.
