BREAKDOWN

VANYA – 40s-50s. Male identifying. Any ethnicity. Never married. He and his niece Sonya have worked tirelessly to maintain the family’s working farm. He’s come to feel that he’s wasted his life toiling for his brother-in-law, Serebryakov, and is now resentful of all the professor’s achievements. Full of regret, easily frustrated. Believes he is in love with Yelena. ROLE IS CAST

ASTROV - Early 40s. Male identifying. Any ethnicity. A doctor. Attractive, but beginning to be worn down by the stresses of his work and by his drinking. Despite his dissatisfaction with life and his sometimes cynical world views, he’s an impassioned advocate for the environment. Likes spending time at the farm with his friend, Vanya. Attracted to Yelena. ROLE IS CAST

YELENA – Late 30s - 40s. Female identifying. Any ethnicity. Serebryakov’s younger wife and longtime friend of Vanya. Charismatic, clever, she’s aware of the effect she has on people. Devoted to her husband and his needs but feels unstimulated and restless in the country. She’s struggling with the role she has chosen in the world and is looking for distraction. ROLE IS CAST

SONYA – 30s. Female identifying. Any ethnicity. Serebryakov’s daughter from his first marriage and Vanya’s niece. Has been faithfully working on the family farm alongside Vanya and has been dutifully sending all the earnings to her father, although, by rights, the farm belongs to her. Generous, selfless, unafraid of hard work, she knows how hard the world is, but has always maintained a sense of hope. ROLE IS CAST

SEREBRYAKOV: 60s – 70. Male identifying. Any ethnicity. A once wealthy and celebrated university professor who is now retired and lives in the city on the earnings of his late first wife’s working farm. Recent illness has begun to alter him from a vibrant and charismatic man to an irritable, demanding invalid, self-involved, and very aware of his growing age. ROLE IS CAST

MAMA VOINITSKI: 60s - 70s. Female identifying. Any ethnicity. Mother of Vanya (and of Vanya’s late sister, the first wife of Serebryakov) Feels more kinship to her former son-in-law the Professor than to Vanya. Considers herself a progressive thinker, she reveres all things intellectual and has little patience for Vanya’s feelings. ROLE IS CAST

MARINA – 60s - 70s. Female identifying. Any ethnicity. Has been nanny to family members for many years and is loved and valued by all of them. Wise, perceptive, and candid. ROLE IS CAST

WAFFLES – 50s-70s. Male identifying. Any ethnicity. A broke former landowner who now lives on the farm, he’s godfather to Sonya’s and a faithful family friend. A very decent person who is essentially satisfied with his lot in life and never complains. Plays the guitar. ROLE IS CAST

YEFIM: 18-60, Male identifying. Any ethnicity. Works as a general handyman on the house and works on the farm. Must play violin well (folk/contemporary style). Please prepare 16 bars of a song of your choosing on the violin in the folk/contemporary style.
