SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in Theatreworks Colorado Springs' 2023-24 Season (See breakdown).

We encourage actors of all races, ethnicities, identities, and abilities to audition for our season and are excited to cast these worlds expansively, except when the race/ ethnicity of the character is integral to the story. The genders given are the genders of the characters.

PREPARATION

Please prepare two contrasting monologues of not more than 5 minutes. If you wish to be considered for the concert musical, please prepare a song as one of your two contrasting pieces. If you wish to be considered for OTHELLO, please prepare a piece in verse as one of your two contrasting pieces. Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

All rehearsals are held at the Ent Center for the Arts, 5225 N. Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs CO.

Most performances are held in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater in the Ent Center for the Arts. Exceptions will be a concert musical in the Shockley-Zaback Theater and our annual outdoor summer production.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

Strong women laughing through tears in this classic American play, reset in a Black beauty shop

Truvy Jones- (Female, 40ish) African-American. Vivacious and full of advice. Annelle- (Female, 18-19) African-American. Moves from unsure, to wild, to religious. Clairee- (Female, 66ish) African-American. Wife of former mayor. Grande dame. M’Lynn- (Female, 50ish) African-American. Socially prominent career woman and mother.

Shelby- (Female, 25) African-American. Prettiest girl in town.

Ouiser- (pronounced Weezer)- (Female, 66ish) African-American. Wealthy curmudgeon. Acerbic, but lovable.

THE LITTLE PRINCE

A stage adaptation of a beloved illustrated book for all ages.

Patricia- (Female, late 30s, Latina) Accountant by day. Older sister with Older Sister Complex. Practical to the core, and a natural caretaker—but often resentful of that role. Believes money brings dignity, security, meaning.

Julia- (Female, late 20s, Latina) Elementary school history teacher by day. Younger sister, six months pregnant. Reclaiming her heritage in preparation for motherhood. Very sentimental. Believes culture brings dignity, security, meaning)

Tessa- (Female, early 30s, White) Real estate agent and TC host. A bubblegum pink pep-princess. Very genial and well-meaning, dreams of making documentaries. Controls. Genuinely wants to help.

INTO THE WOODS, CONCERT MUSICAL

Rapunzel’s Prince/ Florinda (Male, late 20s-late 30s) Vain, gorgeous. Also, a loud energetic woman, Doubles as multiple roles including across gender. Baritone: C sharp-High E. Possible falsetto a plus.

Rapunzel/Steward (Female, early 20s-early 30s) Loopy, lovely, and lonely. Has good vocal control. Doubles as a few additional small roles, some across gender. Strong high soprano. High Soprano: C High A sharp

Jack’s Mother/ Cinderella’s Stepmother/ Cinderella’s Mother (Female, 40s-60s) Wonderful character. Doubles as two mothers. One Hard-working, independent, but weary. Another mean spirited, greedy, demanding. Soprano: B-High F sharp/ Mezzo-Soprano: A sharp-High F

Mysterious Man/ narrator (any gender, 50s-70s) Mischievous vagrant and good-natured protector all in one. Enjoys the audience. Mostly acting but one big number. Baritone: G-High E flat

Little Red and Jack will be played by young actors in partnership with the Colorado Springs Conservatory and will be considered through other auditions.

All actors should be comfortable with improv, excellent physical comedians, and excited about heightened language.

Doctor Baliardo/ Mopsophil- (Male or Female, 50s-70s) Zany and sometimes slow philosopher who tries and fails to reign in his daughters. Doubles as a Governess across gender.

Scaramouche- (Male, 20s-60s) Already cast. Zany servant.

Don Charmante- (Male*, 20s-30s) Comic ingenue. Dude.

Don Cinthio- (Male*, 20s-30s) Also a comic ingenue. Dude.

Elaria- (Female*, 20s-30s) Comic ingenue. Headstrong. Femme.

Bellamante- (Female*, 20s-30s) Also a comic ingenue. Headstrong. Femme.

Harlequin- (Male or Female, 20s-60s) Another zany servant.

*The genders of the characters do not need to be the genders of the actors, but because of the gender play inherent in this production, we may ask for the performed gender of the characters be clearly legible to audiences. Actors playing those parts should be comfortable taking on these gender presentations to tell those stories to the audience.
