JONATHAN: (He/Him, 25 - early 30s) Dynamic, attractive leading man. Struggling East Village composer turning 30; smart and likeable, extremely passionate and determined; edgily ironic and irreverent and a little self-involved. Strong rock voice. Tenor. Vocal Range: A - A (two octaves)

MICHAEL: (He/Him/They/Them, 25 - early 30s) Jonathan's roommate and best friend. Attractive, gay business professional with an artist's soul. Career-minded and image-conscious, but also supporting of and caring toward Jonathan. Soulful and devoted, but secretive. Doubles several additional character roles. Strong rock voice. Tenor. Vocal Range: B flat - G

SUSAN: (She/Her, 25 - early 30s) Jonathan's dynamic girlfriend. Nurturing, loving and supportive but growing increasingly frustrated with Jonathan's pre-occupation and lack of commitment. This track doubles several additional character roles. A dancer. Mezzo-Soprano. Vocal Range: Strong belt A flat to D

JANE EYRE

JANE EYRE: (She/Her, 20-25 years old) Our story's protagonist. A young, strong-willed woman who is outwardly quiet, watchful, and shy. Her beauty does not come from her physical appearance but rather from her character, humor, and strength. Mezzo Soprano/Alto. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: F#3

YOUNG JANE EYRE/ADÈLE VARENS: (She/Her, 9-12 years old) Full of soul. Strong and willful. Mezzo Soprano. Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: D4. Will double: Adèle Varens, the French ward of Rochester. Her mother, dead, was an actress. She is full of life and drama. Sings very little - Has a French Accent.

EDWARD FAIRFAX ROCHESTER: (He/Him, 30 – 40 years old) An intelligent and powerful male presence, he has been greatly damaged by life and is therefore quite prickly and demanding but has a keen sense of humor and engaging personality. Baritone. Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: B2

MRS REED/MRS. FAIRFAX: (She/Her, 30 - 55 years old) Jane’s cold and cruel aunt who keeps her in an attic after Jane’s parents die. Dying, she refuses Jane’s forgiveness. Dotes on her son, who later dies. Soprano/Mezzo. Vocal Range: D to C-sharp. Will double: Mrs. Fairfax, Rochester's elderly relation and the housekeeper of Thornfield Hall who is fussy, garrulous, and kind-hearted. The comic relief of the show. Alto.Vocal range top: C5; Vocal range bottom: F3

ROBERT/BROCKLEHURST/VICAR: (He/Him, 25 - 50 years old) The Butler at Thornfield. Robert is dry and intelligent and kind, a martyr to Mrs. Fairfax’s whims, deafness and dottiness. An understanding and reliable servant to Rochester. Not a big part but a very present one. Will double: Mr. Brocklehurst, the owner of Lowood School – an imposing and frightening figure to young Jane, cold-eyed, zealous, and pontifical. This track may also double the Vicar. Baritone/Bass. Vocal range top: Bb3. Vocal range bottom: Bb2

BLANCHE INGRAM/SOPHIE/JANE’S MOTHER: (She/Her, 20 - 30) The clever and sophisticated woman who is to be married to Rochester. She is witty and graceful but also possesses a stunning voice. Will double: Sophie and Jane’s Mother. Soprano. Vocal range top: B5 Vocal range bottom: B3

BERTHA MASON/ABBOT/LEAH: (She/Her, 35 - 50 years old) Rochester's mad wife, kept in the attic of Thornfield Hall. She is the strangely beautiful, yet criminally deranged bride stuck in the moment of her final happiness. Will double: Abbot and Leah in the ensemble. Mezzo Soprano/Alto. Vocal range top: C#5 Vocal range bottom: C#4

GRACE POOLE/MISS SCATCHERD/LADY INGRAM: (She/Her, 40-60 years old) Bertha Mason's minder and nurse who is caring and capable and has an occasional fondness for the liquor pot. Mezzo-Soprano. Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: A3. Will double: Miss Scatcherd, a teacher at Lowood school who is hard-faced and embittered. Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: D4 This track will double Lady Ingram, Blanche Ingram’s fierce mother who is pompous and dogmatic.

HELEN BURNS/AGNES/MARY/ BESSIE: (She/Her, 14 - 16) A woman of calm and spiritual demeanor. She is intellectually and spiritually engaging. Teaches the young Jane her most important lesson in life. Mezzo-Soprano. Will double: Agnes, Mary & Bessie in the Ensemble. Vocal range top: C#5 Vocal range bottom: A3

RICHARD MASON/JANE’S FATHER: (He/Him, 45 - 60 years old) Bertha Mason's brother. He is a well-educated gentleman, but mentally and emotionally weak as he is haunted by the wrong he has done to Rochester and the need to care for his deranged, unhappy sister. Will double: Jane’s Father. Tenor. Vocal range top: G4. Vocal range bottom: C3

ST. JOHN RIVERS/JOHN REED/THOMAS/LORD INGRAM: (He/Him, 25 - 35 years old) The appealing and handsome curate of the parish of Gateshead who is caring for Mrs Reed at her death. He is a complex young man, passionately devoted to his Christian faith and duty. Will double: John Reed, Thomas, and Lord Ingram in the Ensemble. Tenor/Bari-tenor. Vocal range top: G4. Vocal range bottom: C3

VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE

VANYA: (He/Him, Late 40s - mid 50s). A gay man who lives with his stepsister Sonia. He took care of their aging parents over a long time and didn’t do much of what he’d like to have done with his life but is resigned. He acts the peacemaker between his two sisters.

SONIA: (She/Her, Late 40s - mid-50s) Vanya’s stepsister living with him. Discontent, upset, regretful. Never had a romantic life. Volatile, and angry that her pretty sister, Masha, has had a life. Able to impersonate Maggie Smith.

MASHA: (She/Her, Late 40s - late 50s) Vanya’s other sister. Glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting around the world. A bit grandiose, but also charming. Has had five failed marriages and has recently taken up with a young actor, Spike. Has been paying everybody’s bills.

SPIKE: (He/Him, Mid-late 20s) An aspiring actor. Masha’s new companion. Sexy, self-absorbed boy toy. Friendly, charming, always seductive, attractive and is very well built. NOTE: Must be comfortable shirtless on stage.

NINA (She/Her, Early-late 20s) Lovely, sincere would-be actress, visiting her aunt and uncle next door to Vanya and Sonia. Star-struck and energetic in her enthusiasm. Responds to Vanya and is kind to him.

CASSANDRA: (She/Her, 20-55) Cleaning lady and soothsayer, she often bursts into prophecy, her diction sounding like Greek tragedy mixed with contemporary thoughts and references. Her seeing the future is somewhat truthful, though not always 100% accurate. She often criticizes her employers Vanya and Sonia, but at the core wants to help them.

THE CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS

WESLEY: (He/Him 18+ to play 18) Weston and Ella’s son. Trying to hold his home together through the family’s poverty and strife and carrying the weight of that. Watchful, angry, hard-headed, afraid. Perceives and is deeply affected by all.

EMMA: (She/Her, 18+ actor to play 13) Weston and Ella’s daughter, 4-H member. Fiery, smart, tough, with big dreams and a serious mouth on her.

WESTON: (He/Him, 40s-50s) A big, prideful man and raging alcoholic, mercurial, with a volcanic temper. Can’t hold a job, in debt up to his ears. Feels the world against him, and he deserves more.

ELLA: (She/Her, 40s-50s.) Wife of an alcoholic, desperate to escape him and their hardscrabble life for anything better. No nonsense, a fighter, at the end of her rope.

ELLIS / and OTHERS: (He/Him, 50s) Owner of the Alibi Club, Weston’s regular bar. Burly, with tattoos, jewelry, and shiny, tight clothes. A businessman and a brute. This track may also play EMERSON or SLATER, one of two sadistic men who come to collect on Weston’s debts.

SERGEANT MALCOLM: (She/Her/He/Him/They/Them, 28-30) A sergeant in the California highway patrol.

TAYLOR / and OTHERS: (He/Him, 40s-60s) Ella’s lawyer and lover who is helping her sell the family’s house. A creepy man with questionable intentions. This track may also double EMERSON or SLATER, one of two sadistic men who come to collect on Weston’s debts.
