BREAKDOWN

PURE COUNTRY

Music: Steve Dorff

Lyrics: John Bettis

Book: Rex McGee

Director/Choreographer: Dan Knechtges

Rehearsals: March 17, 2020

1st Preview: April 14, 2020

Performances: April 16-26, 2020

DUSTY (Male, early-mid 30s) A roguishly sexy charmer who walks away from his wildly successful Country Music star life to return back home to small town Texas to re-discover who he is. Must play guitar. Seeking a real country-crooner style voice. Think Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, and Luke Bryan. Strong, clear country/pop voice. Needs a convincing baritone sound with some comfortable tenor notes.

LULA ROGERS (Female, early-mid 30s) Any ethnicity. Dusty’s manager- spicy, tough as nails, and nobody gets the better of her. She’s been Dusty’s manager since the beginning, and has completely created his “Dusty” persona, selling it to the world and making them both a lot of money in the meanwhile. Strong belter with a powerful sound.

MAMA IVY (Female, 50s-60s) Raised Dusty as her own after his parents died. A sage, old country broad; she’s seen it all and can tell you a tale about it. She represents home and family for Dusty on his journey. Earth mama belter with some grit & sass. Alto.

EARL (Male, early-mid 30s) Mama Ivy’s son, who grew up with Dusty as his brother & bandmate. An incredible guitarist, salt of the earth country boy. Dusty left him behind when he went off to Nashville to get famous, and Earl’s been pissed at him ever since. Must play guitar expertly. Strong voice, but less slick than Dusty. Bari-tenor to tenor.

HARLEY (Female, early-mid 30s) Latina. Harley and Dusty grew up together and were hometown sweethearts. He broke her heart and ran away to Nashville to get famous. She put that heartbreak in a box and moved on. She’s content with her small-town life and the family she has created there. Country/pop singer with a clear & beautiful sound. Gentle belt or strong mix- think radio-ready pop/country balladeer. Alto/mezzo.

DISNEY’S NEWSIES

Music: Alan Menken

Lyrics: Jack Feldman

Book: Harvey Fierstein

Director/Choreographer: Chris Bailey

Rehearsals: April 28, 2020

1st Preview: May 19, 2020

Performances: May 21-31, 2020

JACK (Male, early 20s) Any ethnicity. Handsome, charismatic leader of the street kids who sell newspapers, aka the Newsies. A street-smart kid with an artistic soul hiding beneath the bluster. Earnest, everyone’s big brother, protective, pure in his desires for a better life but not at the expense of others. Must have a great pop tenor voice and be a good dancer.

CRUTCHIE (Male, early 20s) Any ethnicity. Specifically seeking actors with disabilities He walks with the aid of a crutch due to a bad leg, but that doesn't hold him back from being right in the middle of any mischief. A real charmer and Jack’s best friend.

KATHERINE (Female, early 20s) Any ethnicity. The strong-willed daughter of Joseph Pulitzer. A model of old fashioned spunk, smarts and opinions. Think of a young Rosalind Russell or Katherine Hepburn. Must have a great pop/contemporary musical theater voice with a high belt. Needs to be a STRONG TAPPER and good dancer.

DAVEY (Male 20-25) The brains of the resistance. Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others. Vocal range : D3-A4

JOSEPH PULITZER (Male, late 40s-mid 50s) A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line. Katherine’s no-nonsense father, Pulitzer doesn’t sympathize with the strikers, but he does eventually – and grudgingly – respect Jack. Vocal rang: C3- F4

MEDDA (Female, late 30s to late 40s) African American. A vaudeville star of the Bowery variety. Sexy, playful, tough when she needs to be but possess motherly affection towards the boys. Must have a big voice and great comic delivery.
