Breakdown

ACTOR #1 (MALE): Plays HENRY PULING, 55, Lead character. A buttoned- down retired London bank manager who has lived a very conservative life. A lifelong bachelor, Henry is alone in the world since his mother’s death and is ill-equipped to deal with his overly-adventurous Aunt Augusta. This actor may also play other roles (as cast) including MR. VISCONTI, 40’s, a corrupt Italian businessman desperate trying to flee Nazi Germany before the Allies arrive. In addition to being the lead character, HENRY also narrates the play and appears in every scene. Not looking for a traditional leading man. Quirkiness and strong character work are preferable. Actor should be very strong in both comedy and drama and should read between the ages of 45-55.

ACTOR #2 (MALE): Plays AUNT AUGUSTA, 75, Lead character. Henry’s passionate, eccentric aunt who has lived a colorful, unconventional life; often engaging in unwise love affairs, illegal activities and the occasional bit of political intrigue. Augusta is fearless and has a real zest for life. Actor may also play other roles (as cast) including the SPANISH GENTLEMAN; a middle-aged palm reader Henry meets on a Riverboat in Paraguay. Actor should be very strong in comedy and read between the ages of 45-60.

ACTOR #3 (MALE): Plays many characters (as cast) including: WORDSWORTH, 40’s, Augusta’s African lover from Sierra Leone; passionate & obsessed with her; SPARROW, 50’s, a tough-talking cockney police detective determined to “get something” on Augusta; HATTY, female, 70’s, an old friend of Augusta’s. Now a gregarious fortune-teller in Brighton; HAKIM, a corrupt Turkish Police Inspector; not a good guy; A DOG; O’TOOLE, 45, a slick CIA Agent, not what he appears to be; and YOLANDA, a shy, romantic 16 year-old living in a small village in Paraguay. Actor should be very strong in comedy and can read anywhere between 25 and 45.

ACTOR #4 (FEMALE): Plays many characters (as cast) including: MISS KEENE, a lonely British spinster still carrying the torch for Henry; TOOLEY, 17, a hip, pot-smoking American girl traveling around Europe and having a lot of sex; MISS PATTERSON, 50’s, a delusional romantic still in love with Henry’s father - 40 years after his death; ITALIAN GIRL, 20’s, desperate to confess her indiscretion to the nearest priest; FRAU GENERAL, 40’s, the cold-hearted wife of a Nazi officer; “OLDER” VISCONTI, Male, 70’s, still crafty, but now an fugitive hiding in Paraguay. Actor should be very strong in comedy and can read anywhere between 25-45.
