ABOUT THE PLAY:

The Visit by Friedrich Dürrenmatt; adapted by Maurice Valency

A wealthy woman returns to her debt-ridden hometown to offer a great sum of money to its struggling inhabitants. Only one fatal condition must be met. This timeless dark satirical play has stunned audiences for decades as it explores the human boundaries of corruption, greed and retribution. The play was first produced on Broadway in the spring of 1958.

BIOs:

Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990) was a prolific Swiss author and dramatist. A proponent of Epic theatre, Dürrenmatt’s works represent a comic response to the tragic nature of contemporary society. His most famous work, The Visit, has been translated and performed in multiple languages and performed for over 6 decades in countries across the world.

Jay Duffer has directed Spaceman, Marie Antoinette, Babette’s Feast, The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) and his short film, Salt at Amphibian Stage. This past summer, he directed Kathleen Culebro’s comedy, The Amazing, Fabulous and Spectacular Untruths of Juan Garcia at Sparkfest.

SEEKING:

CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN: This role has been pre-cast. Woman, 50s-70s, any race/ethnicity. An intimidating yet entirely entertaining force.

ANTON SCHILL: Man. 50s-70s, any race/ethnicity. Somewhat fatigued from life, but still an able man of charm and presence, liked by all in town, shows a considerable emotional range; especially as paranoia and fear of death encroach.

ENSEMBLE: Women/Men, Ages 25 and up, any race/ethnicity. Seeking 8 actors for the ensemble. Ensemble members will each play several roles of the townspeople and Claire’s traveling entourage. Some ensemble will potentially play both male and female roles
