MARIA RAINER: Age range 21-32. Soprano. Caucasian. A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey. Seeking a smart character actress that also happens to be an ingénue. Must have a big and glorious soprano voice and warm and vibrant personality; she is in love with life and everything about it. We want someone that will be creative and breathe new life into this role and not be your typical boring leading lady; Maria is anything but boring. Honest, funny, charming and must work well and truly enjoy working with children. Looking for someone that is beautiful, but simple. Must move well.
CAPT GEORG VON TRAPP: Age range 40-55. Baritone. Caucasian. Seeking a dashing and handsome actor that can be the perfect straight man. He must be able to be the stern and the seemingly emotionless man that the Capt appears to be without seeming lifeless and flat onstage. We want an actor that will take this role to new depths and give it new life.
MOTHER ABBESS: Age range 40-70. Soprano. Caucasian. The Mother Superior of the Nonnberg Abbey. A very simple and wise woman. Seeking a powerful actor with a huge and glorious soprano voice. Needs to bring the house down with her voice. Her main song “Climb Every Mountain” is a such a song of inspiration and we want an actor that will drive this message home, not just a great singer.
MAX DETWEILER: Age range 30-55. Baritone. Caucasian. Looking for a fantastic character actor of any physical type within the age range above. He is always out for himself and how to make an easy buck. He is always on the side of the dominant and winning party no matter what his own views might be; hops on the ship passing closest at the time. He honestly might not even know what his own views are; he just wants to be in the inner circle. All at the same time he is completely loveable.
ELSA SCHRAEDER: Age range 30-45. Mezzo-Soprano. Caucasian. A very wealthy, glamorous and gorgeous woman. A woman sought after by many men and is set to marry Capt von Trapp. She is always a very confident person, but Maria brings out her insecurities. Looking for a dynamic actress that will run with this role and take her to a new level. She should be a 1940’s German/Austrian bombshell and very elegant. Trained in all the finest European schools and very proper. Everything Maria is not.
LIESL: Age range 16-20 to play 16. Mezzo-Soprano. Caucasian. A strong willed young lady that has been hardened by the loss her mother and her extremely stern father. She is young and experiencing her first love with Rolf. She ends up opening up to Maria and becoming a warm and wonderful example to her younger siblings. Seeking a fantastic actress with a strong voice and excellent dancer. Strong ballet technique is a plus.
FRIEDRICH: Age range 13-15. Boy-Soprano. Caucasian. Must move well.
LOUISA: Age range 12-14. Mezzo-Soprano. Caucasian. Must move well.
KURT: Age range 8-12. Strong Boy-Soprano. Caucaisian. Must move well.
BRIGITTA: Age range 8-10. Mezzo-Soprano. Caucasian. Must move well.
MARTA: Age range 6-9. Mezzo-Soprano. Caucasian.
GRETL: Age range 4-7. Mezzo-Soprano. Caucasian. A smart little one! A show stealer, but in all the right ways. Needs to be able to learn lines, choreography, and music and retain it. Needs to be a real little pro.
ROLF GRUBER: Age range 17-20 to play 17. Baritone. Caucasian. A charming a dashing young man that is head over heels in love with Liesl. He is very proper and well schooled, but is still just a young boy. He must have a good sense of when he needs to be proper for business and when to loosen up when having fun. He is a Nazi youth. Must dance very well and strong ballet technique is a plus.

SISTER SOPHIA: Age range 30-55. Mezzo-Soprano. Caucasian. Strong character actress. We want these featured nuns to be strong actors that will make smart choices and not allow “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria” something you want to fast forward.
SISTER MARGARETTA: Age range 40-65. Caucasian. Mezzo-Soprano. Mistress of Postulants. Strong character actress. We want these featured nuns to be strong actors that will make smart choices and not allow “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria” something you want to fast forward.
FRAU SCHMIDT: Age range 30-45. Caucasian. The von Trapp family housekeeper. A friendly, but stuffy woman. Seeking a great character actress. Could possibly double as either Sister Berthe, Sophia or Margaretta.
FRANZ: Age range 30-60. The von Trapp family butler. Caucasian.
HERR ZELLER: 16-25. Handsome Nazi youth. Caucasian.
ADMIRAL VON SHREIBER: Age range 40-60. Caucasian. No nonsense kind of man. Nazi.
ENSEMBLE: Age range 20-60. Caucasian. 2-5 men and 10 women. Seeking dynamic singer/actors to play a multitude of different roles to be cast from the ensemble. Characters actors of all sizes are encouraged to audition as we want smart actors to bring these featured roles to life. Roles to be cast from the ensemble: Ursula, Barron and Baroness Elberfeld, neighbors, nuns, novices, postulants, contestants at the festival concert, Nazi’s, etc. All must move well and any ballroom dancing experience is a plus.
