BREAKDOWN

THE SEA HORSE, By Edward Moore
Rehearses Sept. 9-26; Performances September 27 – October 13.

A dumpy waterfront bar. A womanizing merchant seaman. A cynical fat broad who owns and runs the place. Two people hardened by life, with little to protect, and less to lose, as they confront each other in an unexpected love story. Originally produced at New York's famed Circle Rep, this tender, ribald, and complex tale is set in the bar where seaman Harry Bales spends his shore leave. It’s run by Gertrude Blum, with whom Harry enjoys a purely physical relationship when it’s late at night, and his other prospects haven’t panned out. They’re not people who share their thoughts easily. Gertie has encased her heart behind a façade of toughness following a failed marriage. Now Harry has a dream; he wants to buy a fishing boat, and to put down roots for the first time. Two outwardly abrasive characters fight, make up, fight again, spin dreams, deflate them, get physical and reveal their locked-up secrets. A love story for the ages.

ROLES AVAILABLE

Harry: a womanizing commercial seaman, rough around the edges, with a girl in every port. Late 30’s to 40’s, still good looking but beginning to show the wear and tear of a tough lifestyle of being at sea for months at a time. About 6’, athletic in appearance, a man’s man on the outside. Compassionate and smarter than he initially seems. The ultimate dreamer.

Gertrude: early 30’s to early 40’s, a big cynical broad about two hundred pounds (or more), fat, but firm, not flabby, maybe 5’7 or so. Strong sensitive face that hasn’t been distorted by her bulk. “Two Ton Gertie” owns and operates the bar, a woman who has the physical strength to run this dumpy waterfront bar on her own, and to handle the bad characters drawn to it. Over the years, she’s encased her heart behind a believable façade of toughness following a failed marriage, and the death of her father.
