BREAKDOWN

STORYLINE:

The play opens in a modern-day art museum, where three individuals yearn to experience firsthand the wonder and glory of Rembrandt’s work. When a museum guard decides to touch a famous Rembrandt painting, a remarkable journey across the ages ensues. Spanning centuries of human experience, The Rembrandt movingly explores the power of creative expression and the sacrifices we make in the pursuit of love and beauty.

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please prepare a 90 second contemporary monologue. Slate your name, your preferred gender pronouns, and the name of the piece your monologue comes from.

SELF TAPE INSTRUCTIONS:

Please make sure you are in a well-lit area (with a simple background if possible) where we can clearly hear the actor. For the slate, start with a fullbody shot and zoom in or cut to a close-up (bottom of the frame should be at the shoulders and leave a sliver of space above the head for the top frame). The audition can be in a medium wide shot, not too close but not too far.

SEEKING:

We recognize that the characters are written on the binary (use he/him pronouns) and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.

Track 1 (He/Him, 50s-60s, Any ethnicity. HENRY/REMBRANDT) HENRY: a former HS teacher and current museum guard who is in denial about his husband’s terminal cancer. Respectful, knowledgeable, curious intellectually if contained emotionally, even tempered and kind. Generous toward others while maintaining a distance from himself. REMBRANDT: brilliant, hungry, devoted to his family, both robust and soft-hearted. Drinks in the morning, but he’s a pro.

Track 2 (He/Him, Any ethnicity. DODGER/TITUS) DODGER: 18+. A goth museum guard-in-training. Subversive, savvy, tattooed, a street artist and seeker. TITUS: 18+ to play a young teen. Rembrandt’s son, clever, loves his father, pragmatic yet philosophically curious young teen with a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and a longing for wholeness.

Track 3 (she/her, early-mid 20s, Any ethnicity. MADELINE/HENNY). MADELINE: Takes an art class to recover from grief. She is forthright and not afraid to argue, but at the moment she is nurturing her pain. HENNY: Rembrandt’s partner, she is loving, practical and grounded, yet funny. A capable mind reader and generous center of her family.

Track 4 (He/Him, 30s-40s, Any ethnicity. JONNY/MARTIN) JONNY: a security guard at the museum with a military background, carries a gun. He is caring in his way and comfortably married. MARTIN: a hospice care nurse, strong, capable and good with people.

Track 5 (He/Him, 60s-70s, Any ethnicity. SIMON/HOMER). SIMON: Henry’s husband, a published poet, currently with stage 4 cancer. He has both an inherent grace and toughness. In the before times, he was a fantastic dinner party guest. HOMER: visionary, crude, brilliant and surprisingly compelling and contemporary.
