Lila (Lauren Patten, Tony Award winner for Jagged Little Pill) is getting by in her Kentucky hometown—scanning groceries at the Save-A-Lot, caring for her erratic brother, and living for Friday nights, when she plays a gig with her band The Lonely Few. And that's enough. Or she thought it was, until Amy, an established musician ragged from the road, passes through and offers her a shot at something much, much bigger. But is Lila ready for the life she never dared to imagine? A world premiere musical by Zoe Sarnak and Rachel Bonds, The Lonely Few is a love story between two women searching for a sense of home.

SEEKING:

PAUL: Middle-aged. Drums. Lila’s friend and Amy’s former stepfather. Ornery, funny, dry, no-nonsense. He had a whole life before he hit this town and opened his bar—grew up in New Orleans, has lived and toured as a musician in all kinds of groups, seen a lot of the country, lived through Katrina. He is in a different place in his life than the other characters, has been through the shit of the world long before any of them. As a younger man, he didn’t want to stay in one place too long—the road felt more comfortable and alive to him. But that has changed since the pandemic hit. He’s now facing some of the choices he made as a younger man, particularly those that pertain to Amy. He is trying to establish a sense of family now, cultivate community.

Vocal notes: Solid singer with his own vocal thumbprint, but open to a variety of styles and ranges.

JJ: 17ish. Keys (Note: Open to Guitar as well). A young woman of color, also from this small Kentucky town—Dylan’s down-the street neighbor. Young, vibrant, and unabashedly herself. She is a very high-achiever who did well in school. She’s loud and bombastic, there is no guile or faraway sadness in her. She operates at a high frequency; her energy is staccato. An unapologetic virgin with an incredibly active (perhaps kinky?!) imagination—she is in the midst of exploring her sexuality and the possibilities unfolding in front of her. She’s undeniably lovable, strong-willed, whip-smart.

Vocal notes: Excellent musical ear and ability to harmonize. Higher vocal range than Lila/Amy but not of the traditional “legit soprano” variety. Think the person on the top part of the Dixie Chicks harmony splits. Mezzo Soprano or Soprano up to E5.

ADAM: 30’s. Lila’s older brother. He’s a guy on the edge—has a sense of precariousness about him, like he might tip into anger or mania at any moment. His edges are sharp; there is danger there. But when he’s good, when he’s in a solid place, he’s wonderful—funny, intelligent, emotionally perceptive. A TRUE music lover and fan—he’s who got Lila into music in the first place. And he is gifted with his hands—works for the garage in town, but smart and self-driven enough to build a guitar. He has struggled with drug abuse and alcohol abuse on and off—his periods of instability are always threatening to take over the “good” times.

Vocal notes: Should be comfortable singing (primarily for one solo moment) but doesn't need to be trained. Open to a variety of styles and ranges. Should have some basic guitar skills as he will likely be accompanying himself.

BONNIE: 40’s/50’s/or even 60’s. A prominent community member in this town, she is very involved in her local church, Abounding Grace, and all the programs it offers. A social worker at the local hospital, she is practical, kind, straightforward, firm. She is conservative, a mother, someone who has been an active participant in the local school system and church community for a long time. She is stern and serious, contained, can come off as judgmental at times. But underneath is someone who has spent her life taking care of others, someone who understands the ins and outs of bureaucracy, and who is committed deeply to her often very difficult job. She is not unkind or unfeeling, but she does not dwell in emotion. Non-singing role.
