Breakdown
Description
The Golem of Havana tells the story of a Hungarian-Jewish family living in Batista’s Havana on the brink of the Cuban Revolution. When their maid’s son, a guerrilla fighter, is injured, they must choose between protecting him and guarding their fragile prosperity since emigrating to Cuba after World War II. The Golem of Havana weaves together the music and traditions of two worlds, asking questions about family, community, religion and politics.
Seeking:
PINCHAS (BARITENOR): Male 40s. Rebecca's father. A gifted tailor, he lacks the grit and business acumen he would need to build a business in Havana that would rival the chain of haberdasheries that his father built back in Hungary. Pinchas acutely feels his wife's contempt for him, and longs to win back her respect.
MARIA (ALTO): Female 40s. African American. An Afro-Cuban housekeeper/nanny. Originally from the country town of Bayamo, Maria came to Havana looking for work after her husband was killed by government soldiers who mistook him for a rebel. Maria practices Santeria and has a close, almost maternal, bond with Rebecca.
BATISTA (BARITONE): Male 50s. The dictator of Cuba. A sentimental, almost gentle man who at a moment's notice will dial a firing squad on his solid gold telephone. Equally sincere in his affection and his rage.
SANCHEZ (BARITENOR): Latino. An aide to Batista. Sturdy, always the biggest man in the room.
OLGA (SOPRANO): Female 20s. Yutka‚s sister, a ghost. She died in the war and haunts both Yutka and Rebecca.
SOLDIER/OTHERS (BARITENOR) – Latino 20’s and 30’s. Strong built. Versatile actor.

REBECCA
ALREADY CAST. (ALTO, CLEAR TONE): 16 years old (looking for an actress in her early 20s); dreams of writing comics. Seeks escape from the scars the Holocaust has left on her troubled Jewish immigrant parents.
YUTKA
ALREADY CAST. (ALTO): Female 40s. Rebecca's mother. Beautiful but weathered Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivor, keenly intelligent but thinks always like a refugee. Her experiences have made her wary and pragmatic; she trusts nobody outside her family and is harshly critical of those within.
ARTURO
ALREADY CAST. (BARITENOR): Male Latino. Late 30s to mid 40s. Pinchas's client, a government official for the Batista Regime, with a taste for fine three-piece suits and corrupt schemes. Suave and facile, charming and dangerous.
TEO
ALREADY CAST. (BARITENOR): Maria's 17-year-old son (looking for an actor in his early 20s), African descent. Politicized by the murder of his father, Teo is a guerrilla fighter prepared to risk his life for the revolution. Soft-spoken and intelligent, he has the self-seriousness of one who has forced himself to grow up too quickly. Falls in love with Rebecca.
