PREPARATION

Please prepare 2 contrasting monologues; if you wish to sing, please prepare 16 bars in the style of the show; an accompanist will be provided. Your audition should not be more than 3 minutes in total. Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

SEEKING:

ROGER: African-American, around 30. Strong desires for a better job, a better life—a dreamer. Funny but also melancholy’ can be brash and sharp when annoyed.

BRANDON: White, around 30. Street-smart, working-class Baltimore, a hard worker. A fun waiter who makes excellent tips, goofy but cool.

VERNON: African American, late 50s/early 60s. Puts up a gruff front but he is really a generous, loving man—adores his wife. A successful salesman because he is a good storyteller. Loyal and sentimental and cantankerous.

PAMELA: African American, late 50s/early 60s. A paralegal with the soul of a poet. Capable, pragmatic, hardworking, but also a dreamer. An extraordinary woman.

MAUREEN: White, 50s. Working class, a huge personality, a hoot at happy hour. Often says the “wrong” things, but not mean-spirited. an unrepentant smoker.

BRITTANY: White, 30s. Pregnant, but already mothers everyone around her. Says what she thinks. A social worker—has seen both the worst and the best of life. Doubles as ALICE - The wacky sitcom housekeeper slash dog reiki healer. a chaos muppet.

SEEKING:

AUDREY: Any ethnicity, 20s-30s. Vocal range: belt, G3-D5; A huge, sensitive, one-of-a kind heart. A dreamer, despite her abusive situation causing her to have low self-esteem. The audience must love her.

SEYMOUR: Any ethnicity, 20s-early 30s. Vocal range: A2-G4; A shy, clumsy, naïve, and overworked florist’s clerk. He is likable, well-meaning and ultimately the hero of the story. He’s in love with Audrey and will do anything to protect her.

MR. MUSHNIK: Any ethnicity, late 40s-60s. Vocal range: G2-G4; Owner of the flower shop, gruff and blustery exterior. Easily tempted by wealth and fame.

ORIN SCRIVELLO: Any ethnicity, 30s.Vocal range: G2-G4; A sadistic dentist: narcissistic, arrogant, and abusive. Has a “bad boy” charm. Doubles as several other brief but high-impact cameo roles, including: MR. BERNSTEIN – fast-talking, smarmy TV producer, MRS. LUCE – elegant, wealthy society matron, SKIP SNIP – slick, smooth talent agent, PATRICK MARTIN – sleazy marketing opportunist.

PUPPETEER: Operates the giant Audrey II plant puppet. Doubles as DERELICT .

VOICE OF THE PLANT: Global majority, ageless. Off-stage voice of on-stage puppet - vocal range: G2-G4; Strong character singer; rock, rhythm and blues style; A sweet-talking, street-smart villain.

CRYSTAL, RONNETTE, & CHIFFON: Black, 20s-30s. Three-part tight harmony, vocal range: Ab3- F5; Young and energetic with sharp senses of humor. Strong singers and movers.
