Breakdown

Pearlene Dunbar (Caucasian, mid- late 20s) works the counter at her father’s Hungry Chief Gas and Grub restaurant in East Tennessee. Being raised by a single father has made her tough and able to handle any problem that comes her way. She is solid, feisty, outspoken, and self-reliant. Pearlene barely tolerates the men in her town including her cowardly fiancé, Stanley Kincaid. Being a pragmatist, she is rarely taken in by anyone until she meets Chuck MacAdie. The excitement of Chuck’s arrival gives her a much-needed break from her daily monotony and an opportunity for romance the likes of which she has never seen. Pearlene, while independent, wants nothing more than to share her life with the right man. She speaks with an Appalachian Mountain dialect.

Chuck MacAdie (Caucasian, mid-late 20s) is an average guy who has always been considered a wimp until he thinks he commits a heinous crime and runs away from the law. His description of the crime makes him the celebrity of Bull’s Bend, TN and makes him realize his ability to excite envy and desire in others. His abusive father has always been able to keep him down until Chuck is driven over the edge by his father and hits him over the head with a cast iron frying pan, leaving him for dead. His murderous act transforms him into a heartbreaker of a man, reveling in his newfound notoriety. Chuck is shy, nervous, and at times incompetent. Once met with adulation by men and swooning from women, Chuck easily takes on the role of the suave and capable “Tennessee Playboy”. When the town turns against him, the desperation to once again be a hero drives him to another crime. Chuck wants desperately to be seen as a real man and is always looking for the opportunity find his own way. He speaks with an Appalachian Mountain dialect.

Widow Quince (Caucasian, late 40s-50s) is a three-time widow whose husbands have all died of mysterious causes. Rumor has it she uses arsenic as the secret ingredient in her banana pudding when she’s had enough of her men. She is sly, savvy, and has a personality that matches her massive beehive hairdo. She has a fondness for gossip that makes her an adversary of Pearlene. She is a master of manipulation and always knows how to get what she wants. She does not get along well with other women, particularly the ones she can’t control. But she knows how to charm a man and lure him into her web and get them to do anything she desires. She has a strong sex drive and is constantly on the lookout for new lovers. She speaks with an Appalachian Mountain dialect.

Michah Dunbar (Caucasian, early 50s) owns Hungry Chief Gas and Grub but leaves the daily management of his restaurant up to his daughter. A heavy man, Michah loves fried food, Moon Pies, and moonshine. He is loud, blustery and a big jokester. He is too cheap to give his diner a much-needed facelift. He enjoys drinking with Preacher Stykes and often spends the night out getting drunk. While he loves his daughter, he does not concern himself with her happiness and seems to only want a man for her that will help run his business. He speaks with an Appalachian Mountain dialect.

Preacher Jimmy Stykes (Caucasian, 40s-50s) is the not-so-Godly preacher that spends most of his nights out drinking and participating in unsavory activities. He is witty, opinionated, charismatic, and knows how to have a good time. His religious devotion, while sometimes genuinely God-fearing, often verges on hypocrisy. He instills the wrath of God for humorous effect and follows the scripture according to his convenience. He can’t stand “holier than thou” people and enjoys mocking them. He speaks with an Appalachian Mountain dialect.

Fergus MacAdie (Caucasian, late 50s) is an abusive man with a proclivity for violence, particularly when it comes to his son, Chuck. He only concerns himself with the daily responsibilities of running his farm. His son’s nervousness and inferiority brings him great shame. He longs for a son that he can be proud of. Fergus channels his rage into a vengeful mission to hunt down his son after Chuck attacks him with a frying pan. He is brash, strong, prideful, relentless and always up for a good fight. He does not belong in Bull’s Bend and has no respect for its residents. He speaks with an Appalachian Mountain dialect.
