THE 39 STEPS

Adapted by Patrick Barlow

From the novel by John Buchan

SYNOPSIS: Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! Over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four). In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale!

SEEKING:

THE CLOWNS (2): Any age. Any gender, race, or ethnicity. Vivacious, debonair, and with substantial authority, the clowns expertly execute 150+ roles with olympian prowess and skillful comedic timing. Actors shouldn't feel tied to one track as implied by more “traditional” casting, nor to gender identity of any of the clown roles. Versatility with European accents is a plus. Will lift certain set pieces, and move adroitly throughout stage and between roles. Non-Binary actors strongly encouraged to submit.

PAMELA/ANNABELLA SCHMIDT/MARGARET: 20s - 50s. Female identifying character. Any race or ethnicity. One half of the leading duo who possesses physical, emotional and comedic prowess. Will play all three roles listed, with the possibility of stepping into a clown role or two. PAMELA: a quintessential Hitchcock-esqe leading lady. She is bold, emotionally and intellectually intelligent, powerful, and fashionable. English accent. Annabella: a brilliant but marked Russian woman who is on the run from spies and killed at their hand. Russian accent preferred. MARGARET: a small town farm worker married off to a cruel man; she is eager to see the world, to help Richard out when he stumbles upon her farm, and is willing to risk the consequences from her abusive husband in following her heart and gut. Scottish accent.

RICHARD HANNAY: 20s - 50s. Male identifying character. Any race or ethnicity. One half of the leading duo who possesses the Hitchcockesque suave, dashing, debonaire qualities. He is an artistic soul, a rebel, and an everyman capable of unlocking a secret heart filled with will and determination, cunning and vulnerability. Adept physical comedian, a great listener and responder, and ensemble member.

EMPANADA LOCA

Author: Aaron Mark

SYNOPSIS: Now living deep under Manhattan in an abandoned subway tunnel with the Mole People, a very hungry Dolores recounts her early years selling weed with her boyfriend, her return to Washington Heights after thirteen years in prison, her fortuitous reunion with an old stoner friend who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his empanada shop, and the bloodbath that ultimately sends her fleeing underground. Loosely inspired by the legend of Sweeney Todd, Empanada Loca is contemporary Grand Guignol horror in the style of Spalding Gray.

SEEKING:

DOLORES ROACH {OFFER OUT} - Female Presenting, Age: 35 - 45, Latinx. Based on the character of Sweeney Todd. It is crucial she not be approached as a “villain”. Seductively lovable, inhumanly lonely, and deliriously hungry. She’s talking to a specific visitor who is NOT the audience. She has a desperate need to keep her visitor in the room. The actress playing Dolores doubles as:

DOMINIC, thirties, Dolore’s boyfriend

GIRL, twenties, in Dolore’s old apartment

DEALER on the street

HOMELESS MAN outside Empanada Loca

NELLIE, sixteen, transsexual, works at Empanada Loca

LUIS, late thirties/early forties, owns Empanada Loca

JONAH, early thirties, the new landlord

MARCIE, forties, a customer

LIFESPAN OF A FACT

Authors: Jeremy Kareken & David Murrell and Gordon Farrell

Based on the book by John D’Agata and Jim Fingal

SYNOPSIS: Jim Fingal is a fresh-out-of-Harvard fact checker for a prominent but sinking New York magazine. John D’Agata is a talented writer with a transcendent essay about the suicide of a teenage boy—an essay that could save the magazine from collapse. When Jim is assigned to fact check D’Agata’s essay, the two come head to head in a comedic yet gripping battle over facts versus truth.

SEEKING:

EMILY PENROSE - Female presenting - Age: 50 - 65. A career editor for an upscale, journalistic magazine. A master of multitasking and efficiency. She is very good at her job, and believes strongly in the power of the stories her publication tells. But she is also aware of the weight of responsibility she carries.

JIM FINGAL - Male presenting - Age: 20 - 30. A Harvard graduate and intern at the magazine, Jim is eager to prove himself in his new job and absolutely dedicated to getting it all correct. He's a little anxious, a lot tenacious, and willing to fight for what he believes is right.

JOHN D'AGATA - Male presenting - Age: 35 - 50. A renowned author and essayist. Talented, well educated and with a strong belief in what he sees as truth through art, he can also be abrasive, sarcastic, and arrogant.
