PREPARATION

Please prepare 2 monologues, at least one by Shakespeare, with a combined length of no more than 3 minutes. Also, bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Richard Burbage / Ben Johnson / Horatio - Presents as male, 40+, any racial identity. Burbage is a famous lion of the stage. Johnson is a rival of Shakespeare’s, a bear of a man, and emotional. Horatio is the character from Hamlet. One actor will play all three tracks.

Alice Heminges / Susannah Shakespeare - Presents as female, 30s, any racial identity. Alice is Heminges’ daughter, well-loved, “one of the guys”. Susannah is Shakespeare’s daughter, dutiful. One actor will play both tracks.

Elizabeth Condell / Emilia Bassano Lanier - Presents as female, 30+, any racial identity. Elizabeth is Condell’s wife, savvy and fun. Emilia is a fiery Italian feminist and poet. One actor will play both tracks.

Rebecca Heminges / Anne Hathaway Shakespeare - Presents as female, 50+, any racial identity. Rebecca is Heminges’ wife, strong, busy, and pious. Anne is Shakespeare’s wife, ailing now, but strong-willed and dignified. One actor will play both tracks.

Ed Knight / Isaac Jaggard - Presents as male, 20-40, any racial identity. Ed is a stage manager, serious and particular. Isaac is William Jaggard’s son, sensitive and an artist at heart. One actor will play both tracks.

Ralph Crane / Barman / Compositor / Francisco - Presents as male, 20s, any racial identity. Ralph is a scrivener for The King’s Men, quiet, efficient, deft. The Barman is a ruffian. Compositor is in the employ of William Jaggard, young and earnest. Francisco is the character from Hamlet. One actor will play all four tracks.

William Jaggard / Barman 2 / Sir Edward Dering – Presents as male, 50+, any racial identity. Jaggard is a well-connected and somewhat shady publisher. Crude and willful, an ass. Barman 2 is a drunk. Sir Edward Dering is a lover of books and theatre. One actor will play all three tracks.

Marcus / Boy Hamlet / Crier / Bernardo – Presents as male, young (teens – 20s), any racial identity. Marcus is an apprentice in Jaggard’s print house, nosy yet honest. Boy Hamlet is a young actor. Crier is a newsboy. Bernardo is the character from Hamlet. One actor will play all four tracks.

Kate – Presents as female, 20+, any racial identity. Kate is the eldest of Baptiste’s two daughters. Extremely smart and willful, excellent with language.

Petruchio – Presents as male, 30+, any racial identity. Petruchio is a soldier, extremely smart and willful, excellent with language.

Tranio – Presents as any gender identity, 20+, any racial identity. Tranio is Lucentio’s servant. Clever.

Lucentio – Presents as male, 20s, any racial identity. Lucentio is a young man of wealth, naïve and impulsive. In love with Bianca.

Bianca – Presents as female, 20s, any racial identity. The younger of Baptiste’s two daughters. Bianca is clever, manipulative, and knows she is beautiful.

Baptiste – Presents as any gender identity, 40+, any racial identity. A wealthy single parent. Good at business, not so good at parenting.

Grumio – Presents as male, 40+, any racial identity. Servant to Petruchio. Insightful, witty, excellent comic instincts.

Gremio – Presents as male, 50+, any racial identity. Extremely wealthy man. Lecherous, competitive, and greedy. A suitor to Bianca.

Hortensio – Presents as male, 20+, any racial identity. A suitor to Bianca. Some skill with a musical instrument preferred.

Biondello – Presents as any gender identity, young (teens – 20s), any racial identity. A servant to Petruchio, excellent with language.

Pedant – Presents as any gender identity, 50+, any racial identity. A school teacher who pretends to be Lucentio’s parent.

Vincentio – Presents as any gender identity, 50+, any racial identity. Lucentio’s parent and man of wealth. Bold and commandeering.

Widow – Presents as female, 30+, any racial identity. Sharp-tongued and not afraid to speak her mind or say what she wants.

KING LEAR by William Shakespeare

Please Note: The role of King Lear has been pre-cast.

Goneril – Presents as female, 30+ any racial identity. Lear’s eldest daughter. Cruel and deceitful under a thin veneer of imperious decorum.

Regan - Presents as female, 30+, any racial identity. Lear’s second daughter. Competitive and ruthless.

Cordelia / Fool – Presents as female, 20+, any racial identity. Cordelia is Lear’s youngest daughter, dutiful, honest, and righteous. The Fool is Lear’s jester.

Witty, sardonic, excellent with language. Some musical or singing talent ideal. One actor will play both roles.

Gloucester – Presents as male, 50+, any racial identity. An earl of Lear’s kingdom.

Edgar – Presents as male, 20+, any racial identity. Eldest son to Gloucester. A good, if gullible, man. A convincing madman. Stage combat.

Edmund – Presents as male, 20+, any racial identity. Gloucester’s younger, illegitimate son. Treacherous and ambitious. Stage combat.

Kent – Presents as any gender identity, 40+, any racial identity. An earl of Lear’s kingdom. Honest and fiercely loyal to Lear. Stage combat.

Cornwall – Presents as male, 30+, any racial identity. Regan’s husband. Hot-tempered and hard.

Albany – Presents as male, 30+, any racial identity. Goneril’s husband. Starts the play meek and subservient to his wife, but develops both a conscience and a spine over the course of the play.

France – Presents as male, 20+, any racial identity. The King of France. Generous and kind. Devoted to Cordelia.

Burgundy – Presents as male, 30+, any racial identity. The Duke of Burgundy, a suitor for Cordelia’s hand who rejects her when she is disinherited.

Oswald – Presents as any gender identity, 20+, any racial identity. Devoted and sinister servant to Goneril.
