PREPARATION

Please prepare two contrasting 1-to-2-minute monologues OR if singing, one 1-to-2-minute comedic OR dramatic monologue and a maximum 32-bars of a song (bring sheet music). Please bring a headshot with resume attached by staples.

BREAKDOWN

THREE MUSKETEERS
By Catherine Bush, adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas

Seeking:

D’Artagnan: Male, early 20’s. Impoverished Gascon nobleman comes to Paris to become a Musketeer. Rugged, brave, excellent swordsman and fighter. Rough around the edges. A romantic with a hair-trigger temper. Youthful and ambitious.

Athos: Male, early to mid 30’s. The oldest of the Musketeers. D’Artagan’s mentor. A man of honor. Exceedingly brave. There is a tortured sadness about him. An excellent fighter and swordsman.

Aramis: Male, mid 20’s. A bit foppish, expects to become a priest. But he is also a lady’s man and something of a poet. Excellent fighter and swordsman.

Porthos: Male, mid 30’s. Vain, a bit larger than life, well dressed, self-important, loud and brash. Also a brave fighter and true friend. Porthos is a bit stout. Excellent fighter and swordsman.

Constance: Female, early 20’s. Devoted dressmaker to the Queen. D’Artagnan falls instantly in love with her. She is loyal and honest, a courageous heroine.

The following characters double and triple in various roles; all must fight at some point in the play:

Monsieur de Treville: Male, early to mid 40’s: The Captain of the Musketeers. Deeply respected. An old soldier. Tough and fearless. A distinguished gentleman. A close friend of the king. A father figure to the Musketeers. Everyone is a little afraid of him. An authority figure. Also doubles in various other soldier and spy roles.

Milady de Winter: Female, late 20’s/early 30’s. Mysterious and evil. A killer. A spy. She can manipulate anyone. In league with Richelieu and Rochefort.

Rochefort: Male, 30. A spy. A dangerous man. Wears an eye patch. Shaved head. Ruthless. A killer. A cunning agent of the Cardinal. A man of intrigue. A skilled fighter and swordsman.

Cardinal Richelieu: Male, early 40’s. The most powerful man in France. An authority figure. Self-absorbed and self-important. Works to undermine the Queen and manipulate the King. Not to be trusted. Devious and underhanded.

Lord Buckingham: Male, late 20’s/early 30’s: Minister of King Charles I of England. In love with Queen Anne of France. A romantic hero. He will do anything to see Anne.

King Louis XIII: Male, mid- late 30’s. Foppish, easily distracted, easily deceived and manipulated. In love with his reflection. Vain. Petty and petulant. Young and not too bright.

Queen Anne: Female, late 20’s. An outsider to the court. Isolated but intelligent, brave and resourceful. She is from Austria but she is of Spanish heritage. She is disliked by the King and the Cardinal. She has to be suspicious of everyone.

From the fight director:
As for fight skills, we are particularly interested in people who have training (such as Certification by the Society of American Fight Directors) in Single Sword, Single Rapier, and Rapier and Dagger. People with training in other weapon disciplines (Broadsword, Sword and Shield, Quarterstaff, Smallsword) will also be advantageous. Any acrobatics, gymnastics or tumbling skills are a plus.

Diana: Female, 40 to 45. Delusional, bipolar, and depressed. The sexiness of her yesterdays has only recently begun to soften. She is determined to make her family perfect but is tortured by a death in the family. Rock mezzo to high G, strong belt/mix to D

Gabe: Male, 18 to 21. Diana & Dan's son. Dashing, athletic, and bright. He is a playful man and everything a mother could imagine. Rock tenor to high A (full voice), possible high C (full voice), strong falsetto to high D

Dan: Male, 40 to 45. Diana's husband. He is handsome and genuine. Though a constant in Diana's tumultuous life, he has grown tired and weary of her antics. High rock baritone or tenor to high A (full voice), strong falsetto to high D flat

Natalie: Female, mid- to late-teens. Diana & Dan's troubled daughter. An accomplished pianist and hardworking student, her struggles are exacerbated by her mother's behavior. She greatly admires Henry. Rock mezzo to high G, strong belt/mix to E flat

Henry: Male, late-teens. Natalie's classmate. The all-around musician, philosopher, and slacker. He has an intoxicating capacity for sympathy and romance. Rock tenor to high G (full voice), strong falsetto to high A

Dr. Madden: Male, 30 to 40. Diana's handsome psychiatrist. Quite assured in his practice and considered somewhat of a rock star. Rock tenor or baritone with good top to high A flat (full voice)
