1st rehearsal: 9/20/16
Run Dates: 10/21/16 - 11/8/16

Great Expectations is an ensemble play in which five of the actors play multiple roles in quick succession. Actors must be versatile, experienced in ensemble work, and adept at direct address. Featured roles are listed below.

Seeking:

Pip
20s, handsome, attractive, charismatic. For the first third of the play he is in his teens. Starts as working class boy of and naïve dreamer of seven, comes into wealth, deserts his friends, and eventually recognizes that money does not make happiness.

Actor One
Physically imposing roles, 40s-50s:
Magwitch: an escaped convict who grows rich in Australia, takes a liking to Pip, and becomes his anonymous patron.
Mr. Jaggers: a lawyer of great standing and accomplishment who suffers no fools.

Actor Two
Roles:
Herbert Pocket: Pip’s best friend in London. Honest, loyal, witty, good-hearted. 20’s.
Mr. Wopsle: A clerk in Pip's church who goes to London to try his hand at acting. An eccentric narcissist. Late 30’s.

Actor Three
Strong ‘character’ roles, late 30s:
Mrs. Joe: Pip's controlling older sister who constantly reminds Pip of all she has done for him.
Miss Havisham: a broken-hearted, reclusive and intimidating woman who was abandoned and swindled by her fiancé on her wedding day. She raises Estella to exact revenge on all men.

Actor Four
Young ingénue and character roles, 20s, including Magwitch’s arch nemesis, Compeyson:
Estella: beautiful, poised, haughty teen-aged girl who is raised as a heart-breaker. Eventually meets her match and then grows to appreciate Pip.
Biddy: teacher and advisor to Pip and Joe’s helper and eventual wife. Self-less, loving, down-to-earth and loyal.
Compeyson: Magwitch’s former partner in crime and nemesis. An unrepentant criminal.

Actor Five
African-American working class and gentlemen roles, 30s-40s:
Joe: A muscular blacksmith, husband to Pip's sister, and Pip’s adopted father. In spite of Pip's snobbery, he remains faithful and loving to him.
Mr. Wemmick: Chief clerk for Jaggers. Business-like and unemotional in the office, but at home a caring, gentle man who becomes a friend and advisor to Pip.
Bentley Drummle: A snobbish gentleman who marries Estella and abuses her.

1st rehearsal: 12/27/16
Run Dates: 1/27/17 - 2/12/17

Seeking:

Amir
40, of South Asian origin. Speaks with a perfect American accent. A brilliant, smart, ambitious, successful lawyer, so sharply dressed and sophisticated it nearly masks his deep self-consciousness and insecurity. Language and text skills a must for the actor, who is also unafraid to engage in deep political discussion.

Emily
Early 30s, white, lithe, attractive, upper middle class, thoughtful, curious engaging visual artist. Romanticizes the unknown in love and art; self-centered as some artists are and also optimistic and naïve as some artists are. Language and text skills a must for the actor, who is also unafraid to engage in deep political discussion.

Abe
22, of South Asian origin. As American as American gets. Vibrant and endearing. Strong, quiet and thoughtful, passionate, and a young man of conviction. Language and text skills a must for the actor, who is also unafraid to engage in deep political discussion.

Isaac
40, white, smart, attractive. A curator at the Whitney Museum, which means he has immense power, which he knows but doesn’t often flaunt. Part of the intellectual elite in New York City; quick with the quip and a sharp critical eye and tongue. Language and text skills a must for the actor, who is also unafraid to engage in deep political discussion.

Jory
Mid-late 30s. African American. Commanding, forthright, intelligent. Ambitious, savvy lawyer. She’s made it to the top of a male-dominated field. Sexy, powerful, wry sense of humor. Language and text skills a must for the actor, who is also unafraid to engage in deep political discussion.
