SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in Studio Theatre's 2023-24 Season (See breakdown).

All roles will be understudied.

Equity Performers of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, gender identities and expressions, and performers living with disabilities are encouraged to audition.

PREPARATION

Please prepare 2 contrasting short monologues. Auditions may not exceed 3 minutes total. Please bring two copies of your headshot and resume stapled together.

The character breakdowns include gender specifications that reflect the identity of the characters as written by the playwrights. However, we strongly encourage performers with any gender expression and/or gender identity to audition for any role.

SYNOPSIS: The lives of two women with vastly different life experiences intersect at a destination wedding in Cancún. Adriana has left her home of Chetumal, Mexico and is working as the manager of the housekeeping staff at a resort. Sarah, from Vancouver, is the sister of the bride and maid of honor and the self-acknowledged family screw up. A chance encounter during a torrential downpour leads each woman to confront her personal storm and to consider the possibility that, though isolated, she may not be as alone as she believes.

FAT HAM

SYNOPSIS: Juicy is a queer, Southern college kid, already grappling with some serious questions of identity, when the ghost of his father shows up in their backyard, demanding that Juicy avenge his murder. But revenge doesn't come easy to Juicy, a sensitive and self-aware young Black man in search of his own happiness and liberation. From an uproarious family cookout emerges a compelling examination of love and loss, pain and joy.

[JUICY] – Male, Black, 20s. Lonely and smart. A kind of Hamlet.

[TEDRA] – Female, Black, late 40s. Juicy’s mother. A good mother. A kind of Gertrude.

[REV/PAP] – Male, Black, late 40s. REV is Tedra’s current husband and the brother of her ex-husband. Pig farmer and pit master. Electric. A kind of Claudius./ PAP is the ghost of Juicy’s father.

[OPAL] – Female, Black, early 20s. One of Juicy’s only friends, she loves him and worries about him. A kind of Ophelia.

[LARRY] – Male, Black, early 20s. A Marine trying to heal from PTSD. He is attracted to Juicy, very awkward and clearly has a secret. A kind of Laertes.

[RABBY] – Female, Black, late 40s. Larry and Opal’s mother and Tedra’s friend. Semi-churchy who just wants to drink and praise the Lord. A kind of Polonius.

[TIO] – Male, Black or Afro-Latinx, late 20s or 30s. Juicy’s cousin and oldest friend. A kind of Horatio.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

SYNOPSIS: London, 1967. Beatlemania is in full effect, the “Me” generation is in its prime and Kenneth and Sandra have the world at their fingertips. It’s the summer of love, and that’s all they need. But what will happen when the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll fade away and these boomers have babies of their own? From passion to paranoia, Love, Love, Love takes on the baby boomer generation as it retires, and finds it full of trouble.

SYNOPSIS: You are cordially invited to the best day of someone else's life but what if it's also the worst day of yours? Join Carlo as she attempts to make it through the night without drinking too much, talking too much, or trying to win back the bride.

SEEKING:

[CARLO] – A wedding guest. Female, 30s. She masks her pain with an outrageous sense of humor. Self-sabotaging. Trying hard, but failing to keep her emotions at bay.

[CARLY] – A bridesmaid. Female, 30s. A heterosexual, devoted bridesmaid with a master’s degree in passive aggressive communication.

[ELI] – A wedding guest. Male, 30s. A straight man in a floral shirt. A romantic. Ready to propose to his long-term partner.

[MARIA] – Mother of the bride. Female, 60s. The First Wives Club meets ex-Berkeley hippie. A more deeply pickled form of Carlo, she has a biting wit.

[LEIGH] – A wedding guest. they/them. 30s. Seductive and hip. A graphic designer with great eyebrows.

[EVA] – The bride. Female, 30s. Carlo's ex. She is generous and kind but sees through the bullshit.

[VICTOR] – The cater-waiter for the evening. Male, 20s. Queer, fabulous but disguised in civilian clothes - or rather, catering clothes.

PROBLEMS BETWEEN SISTERS

SYNOPSIS: Jess and Rory are sisters with problems between them. A response play to True West, as part of the play cycle “All Long True American Stories” in which playwright Julia May Jonas reimagines five contemporary American-male experience plays, Problems Between Sisters looks at creativity, aging, and the elusive demands of the Primal Female.

SEEKING:

[JESS] – Female, White, 39, Very Pregnant. Dressed nicely and neatly but minimally. Everything she does is very precise.

[RORY] – Female, White, 29. Jess’ younger sister. Also very pregnant, but the kind you can’t tell from the back; the pregnancy of movies and magazines. A free spirit dripping with energy and vitality.

[ANITA] – Female, Latinx, 40s. A gay, no-nonsense, tells-it-like-it-is art dealer who owns a gallery in NYC.

[AUNT BARB] – Female, White, 60s or 70s. A bohemian older woman with a chic Vermont cabin who is spending her retirement travelling the world; currently in Paris.

THE COLORED MUSEUM

SYNOPSIS: A satire of modern conventions surrounding Black identity, The Colored Museum is set in a fictional museum where a collection of 11 “exhibits” have been mounted for public viewing. Each exhibit takes the form of a monologue or short scene and explores themes of slavery, stereotypes, identity, generational trauma, and intracommunal conflict.
