STARGAZERS

SEEKING:

RITA (CAST) – 50s, she/her/hers. White. Stern, harsh, and tough, having been completely broken by the loss of her daughter Cate. Often inscrutable, especially as she makes the difficult decision of whether to sell her land. Has a streak of determination that sometimes hides the deep love she has for those around her.

JESSICA/BRIDGET (CAST) – JESSICA, mid 20s, she/her/hers, white. The only woman on a multi generational farm and desperately wants to farm her own ground. Ambitious, practical, and frustrated by the restrictions placed upon her, which often manifests as defensiveness and anger towards those around her. She was Cate’s best friend in high school and the two shared a similar set of ambitions to farm. Doubles as BRIDGET, 30s, she/her/hers, white. She works for her brother-in-law Andy as part of the construction company hired by the Dedham Group. Brusque and self-possessed and enjoys picking fights for her own amusement.

ARACELY (CAST) – mid 20s, she/her/hers. Latina. Dreamy, sensitive, and wears her heart on her sleeve. She grew up on a horse farm and loves her family and their land. Trying to make a life in LA, despite her homesickness. She was Cate’s best friend when they were very young, sharing a love of horses.

CLEMENTINE – 30s, she/her/hers. Black. Awkward in her new role in the Dedham Group but finding her way back to her assertive and confident self. Incensed by injustices and passionate to help despite her doubts about the right path to fix them. She is the girlfriend of Jim.

CASEY/JIM – CASEY, mid 20s, he/him/his, white. A fifth-generation farmer who didn’t go to college. Boyfriend of Avery. He’s laid-back (to mask a certain immaturity), a people pleaser, as well as very private and not fully out. Doubles as JIM, 30s, he/him/his, white. A New Yorker who is assured of his politics and his role at the Dedham Group, he is a big supporter of his girlfriend, Clementine, though that may be to mask his own ambitions.

AVERY/ANDY – AVERY, 20s or 30s, he/him/his, Latino. A basketball coach at the nearby high school, which has earned him a bit of local celebrity. An earnest outsider whose words can’t keep up with his thoughts. He is the boyfriend of Casey. Doubles as ANDY, 30s, he/him/his, Latino. A manager at a construction company hired by the Dedham Group and the brother-in-law of Bridget. Forthright and easily irked, but only because he wants to do a good job.

AL OLDS/MR. DEDHAM – AL, 50s, he/him/his, white. Mostly good-natured, though still hurt, angry, and aching about his daughter Cate’s death and his subsequent exile from the farm. He now feels purposeless but is still deeply caring. Doubles as MR. DEDHAM, 50s, he/him/his, white. The figurehead of the Dedham Group, he is a man with money and an ideology he’s willing to see through. Wears a professional mask he rarely lets slip.
