BREAKDOWN

SHAKE THE DISEASE

SYNOPSIS: Murder, suicide and AIDS plague a gay resort in Northern California during the fateful summer of 1989. As time slips backwards and forwards spanning several decades, mythology, urban legend and gay bashing come together to weave a narrative of lust, love, Queer history and violence. All actors will play multiple roles as noted below.

SEEKING:

Role 1: River/Niklaus/Garrett - Cis man, early 20s in appearance, identifies as part of the Global Majority. Role requires onstage intimacy, violence, and undress to underwear, no nudity. River: Server at Gay Resort. Queer identified. Possesses mischievous innocence despite life's challenges. Niklaus: A memory of Peter’s former lover that River inhabits in a flashback. Sensitive and empathic, perhaps clairvoyant. An activist, steadfast in beliefs but often downplayed by his partner. Anxious and apprehensive around his own intuition. Intuitive yet cautious. Garrett: An auteur filmmaker with a driven and focused demeanor. Inspired by Dennis Cooper, Kenneth Anger, and Todd Haynes. Prioritizes vision over comfort, unafraid to be controversial and provocative to serve his art.

Role 2: Keith/David - Man, early to mid-20s, any ethnicity. Role requires onstage intimacy, violence, and undress to underwear, no nudity. Keith: Head cook at the resort and older brother to Kurt. Deeply closeted, sensitive but guarded. Conceals vulnerability behind a facade of gruff exterior. Reveals his true self in moments of intimacy with River. David: Radical fairy and film actor. Performs in Garrett's movies. Eager and enthusiastic, drawn to radicalism. Easily influenced.

Role 3: Kurt/Ansel - Man, early to mid-20s, any ethnicity. Role requires onstage intimacy, violence, and undress to underwear, no nudity. Kurt: Season cook and younger brother to Keith. Feral quality, nomadic, travels in his trailer. Sensual tease with a hint of cockiness. Homophobic and dangerous, with an unpredictable nature. Ansel: Empathic and sensitive, but aggressive when pushed into a role. Uncomfortable in the space they enter yet becomes dominant within the scene. Disappears into the role of a dominant top during filming, commanding attention and control.

Role 4: Peter/Big Earl - Cis-man, Early 50s, Caucasian. Role requires body make-up of lesions and sores. Peter: Emaciated by late-stage AIDS, Peter exudes flamboyance amid his longing for the past. He embodies a ghostly presence, characterized by a pariah nature and a haunting reminder of bygone eras. We also witness Peter a decade earlier: a driven, vital, and healthy individual deeply in love with Niklaus. He prioritizes career over activism, making a pivotal miscalculation in queer history that he later regrets. This portrayal offers a profound contrast to the character we meet in the 80s. Big Earl: Solitary and misunderstood, Big Earl is a spectral figure, a manifestation of eerie presence. He emanates a sense of creepiness, perceived as simple and uneducated, yet harboring ghoulish qualities reminiscent of an 80s horror villain.

Role 5: Leslie/Bambi - Transwoman, late 30s to early 50s, any ethnicity. Leslie: Resort Manager. Lesbian. Has a no-nonsense, practical approach to her duties. With an extended history with Peter, Leslie holds a soft spot for River, emanating maternal energy amid her responsibilities. Bambi: A radical freedom fighter, Bambi is unapologetically militant and revolutionary in her beliefs. She engages in activism, throwing bricks
