BREAKDOWN
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

Rehearsals Begin: Week of May 29, 2018 Performances: June 12 - June 17, 2018
DON LOCKWOOD: 35-45, high baritone. One of the brightest stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Don Lockwood is dashing, charismatic and a little smug. He is a true triple threat and easily transitions from silent film star to actual talking actor. Must be an excellent tap dancer. Sings “You Stepped Out Of A Dream,” “You Were Meant For Me,” and “Singin’ In The Rain.”
KATHY SELDEN: 25-35, alto with mix. A lovely and ambitious young woman and aspiring actress, Kathy is making ends meet dancing at the Coconut Grove when she crosses paths with movie stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont. Charming, smart and eager, she is soon discovered to be a great talent and offered a contract with Monumental Pictures. Sings “Lucky Star,” “Would You” and “Good Morning!”
COSMO BROWN: 30-40, tenor. Cosmo is Don’s best friend, Monumental Pictures’ accompanist and eventual head of the Music Department. Sarcastic and quick with a quip, he is happy to make jokes at anyone’s expense (including his own). He is an energetic jester and must be an excellent comedian and acrobatic tap dancer. Sings “Make ‘Em Laugh,” “Moses,” and “Good Morning.”
R.F. SIMPSON: 45-60. R.F. is the blustering head of Monumental Pictures and Don and Lina’s boss. Though he is the head of the studio, R.F. is easily influenced and often manipulated despite his good intentions.
LINA LAMONT: 30-40. Lina is a stunningly beautiful silent film star in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Glamorous and lovely onscreen, off-screen she is an obnoxious, egotistical diva with a voice that could cut glass. Sings “What’s Wrong With Me?”
ROSCOE DEXTER: 40-50. Roscoe is the high strung director of “Lockwood and Lamont” films at Monumental Pictures. Harried and excitable, he is making the transition from directing silent films to talking pictures with considerable exasperation.
SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS

ADAM PONTIPEE: 35-40, high baritone. Rugged and handsome, Adam is a farmer and hunter in the mountains of Oregon. Vigorous and charismatic, he is the eldest of seven brothers and the man of his household. Gruff yet full of humor, he is a good man at heart with a lot to learn. Sings “Bless Your Beautiful Hide,” “Sobbin’ Women,” and “Love Never Goes Away.”
MILLY: 25-35, alto. Feisty, beautiful and independent, Milly is a frontier woman with a vibrant sense of humor. Falling in love with Adam on sight, she agrees to marry him, unaware he lives with his six unkempt and unruly brothers. Milly is headstrong, opinionated and smart. Sings “Wonderful Day,” “I Married Seven Brothers,” and “Glad That You Were Born.”
BENJAMIN PONTIPEE: Early 30’s. The second eldest Pontipee brother and Adam’s lieutenant, Benjamin is quick tempered, proud and a promising leader though rough around the edges. He falls in love with Dorcas. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Goin’ Courtin’” and “We Gotta Make It Through The Winter.”
CALEB PONTIPEE: Late 20’s. The third Pontipee brother, Caleb is smart, solid and quick witted. Though more level-headed than his brothers, he is just as shy and uncertain around woman as his younger brothers and soon falls head over heels for Ruth. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Goin’ Courtin’” and “We Gotta Make It Through The Winter.”
DANIEL PONTIPEE: Late 20’s. Rough and tumble and unkempt, Daniel is full of youthful enthusiasm and like a twin to his brother Ephraim. He falls in love with Liza. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Goin’ Courtin’” and “We Gotta Make It Through The Winter.”
EPHRAIM PONTIPEE: Late 20’s. Like a twin to Daniel, Ephraim is enthusiastic and unkempt but less talkative than his brothers. He falls in love with Martha. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Goin’ Courtin’” and “We Gotta Make It Through The Winter.”
FRANK PONTIPEE: Early 20’s. The second youngest of the Pontipee boys, Frank is hot headed and full of adolescent fervor. A natural fighter always on the verge of eruption, he is the wildest of the bunch and most reluctant to succumb to Milly’s attempts to domesticate him. He eventually falls in love with Sarah. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Goin’ Courtin’” and “We Gotta Make It Through The Winter.”
GIDEON PONTIPEE: 18, tenor. The youngest of the brothers, Gideon is shy, sensitive and earnest. Rough around the edges but not as wild as the older boys, he takes to Milly immediately. Often the victim of his brothers pranks, he is sweet and enthusiastic nevertheless. He falls immediately in love with Alice. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Goin’ Courtin’” and “We Gotta Make It Through The Winter.”
ALICE: 18. Alice, the youngest of the girls, is sweet, naïve and not too bright. A hopeless romantic, she falls in love with Gideon at first sight. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Wonderful Day” and “We’ve Got To Make It Through The Winter.”
MARTHA: 20’s. Straight laced and still living at home, Martha is attached at the hip to Liza. They do everything together and have known each other since birth. She falls in love with Daniel. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Wonderful Day” and “We’ve Got To Make It Through The Winter.”
LIZA: 20’s. Very superstitious and still living at home, Liza is attached at the hip to Martha. They do everything together and have known each other since birth. She falls in love with Ephraim. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Wonderful Day” and “We’ve Got To Make It Through The Winter.”
DORCAS: 20’s. Bold and spirited, Dorcas works in her parents’ store and rebels against their protective nature. A match for Benjamin’s own bravado, she soon falls in love with him. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Wonderful Day” and “We’ve Got To Make It Through The Winter.”
RUTH: 20’s. Practical and buttoned up, Ruth is a school teacher and mother hen to the other girls. Pragmatic and cautious, she is the problem solver of the group and falls in love with her sensible counterpart, Caleb. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Wonderful Day” and “We’ve Got To Make It Through The Winter.”
SARAH: 20’s. Raised in a family of boys, Sarah is boisterous, cheerful and a “tom boy” through and through. Enthusiastic and game for a challenge, she is quite the match for impetuous Frank Pontipee and they soon fall in love. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings in “Wonderful Day” and “We’ve Got To Make It
NEWSIES

Rehearsals Begin: Week of June 26, 2018 Performances: July 10 - July 15, 2018
JACK KELLY: 20’s to play late teens, tenor. Handsome and street-smart, 18 year old Jack is the leader of the Newsies. Charming, passionate, and with a streak of arrogance, he inspires the Newsies to unionize. An artist at heart, Jack longs for life outside the grind of the city and funnels those desires into his artwork. Sings “Santa Fe,” “The World Will Know,” and “Something To Believe In.” Strong dancer.
JOSEPH PULITZER: 45-60, baritone. Bull-headed and impertinent, Joseph Pulitzer is a self-made tycoon of the publishing industry. A no-nonsense know-it-all, Pulitzer is results oriented and politically motivated, with little patience for the “little guy.” Though he merrily steps on the Newsies to up his profits, he is not altogether unreasonable. Sings “The Bottom Line.”
KATHERINE: 20, Mezzo soprano with belt to E5. Katherine is the feisty, confident and sharp witted young daughter of Joseph Pulitzer. Strong willed and opinionated, she doesn’t fear defying her father. At first unimpressed by Jack’s cocky overtures, Katherine is charmed by the passionate soul underneath. Sings “Watch What Happens” and “Something To Believe In.” Strong Dancer.
MEDDA LARKIN/NUN: 40-50, Alto with belt to E5. Medda is the star of her vaudeville act and the owner of the theatre she performs in. She is smart, tough and a no-nonsense entrepreneur ahead of her time. Medda supports the Newsies’ cause and nurtures Jack’s artistic soul. A larger than life personality with a voice to match. Actor also plays a Nun. Sings “That’s Rich.”
DAVEY: 20’s to play teens, tenor. Thoughtful, deliberate and an outsider, 17 year old Davey’s stable family life sets him apart from the other Newsies. After his father is injured on the job, Davey and his brother, Les, go to work to support the family. He is the brains of the group and the practical voice of reason to Jack’s romantic notions. At first pragmatic and doubtful, Davey eventually finds himself convincing Jack to believe in their cause. Sings “Seize The Day,” and “Watch What Happens.” Strong Dancer.
CRUTCHIE: 20’s to play teens, tenor. 17 year old Crutchie is a slight boy with a bad leg who walks with a cane. Jack’s best friend and full to the brim with charm and mischief, Crutchie’s big heart and sweet nature make him beloved by the other Newsies. Sings “Letter from the Refuge.” Strong Dancer.
GYPSY

Rehearsals Begin: Week of July 10, 2018 Performances: July 24 - July 29, 2018
ROSE: 40-50, alto belt. Rose is an unparalleled stage mother and three time divorcé. Driven by the belief she missed her own chance at stardom, Rose lives vicariously through her two young daughters who she thrusts into show business. Loud, brash, single-minded and fierce, she is a force to be reckoned with. Sings “Some People,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” and “Rose’s Turn.”
LOUISE: 20’s, alto belt. The shy, put-upon eldest daughter of Rose, Louise has been an extra in her family’s life for years. When her younger sister, June, runs away, Louise becomes the subject of Rose’s star making. Naïve and sweet, Louise wants nothing more than her mother’s happiness and will do just about anything to help her achieve it. She is bright and industrious, and soon blossoms into a radiant young star. She transitions from the shy, teen-aged Louise to the sophisticated and carefree burlesque queen, Gypsy Rose Lee. Sings “Little Lamb,” and “Let Me Entertain You.”
HERBIE: 40-50, bass. Rose’s devoted suitor and Louise and June’s reluctant agent. Herbie rejoins show business after becoming smitten with Rose. With an unmatched work ethic and the best of intentions, Herbie does his best to help realize Rose’s dream for her daughters until it becomes clear that her dream doesn’t necessarily include him. Sings in “Small World,” “You’ll Never Get Away From Me,” and “Together Wherever We Go.”
JUNE: 20’s, high belt. June is Rose’s youngest daughter and the apple of her eye. She is a promising talent who has aged out of her childhood vaudeville routine, though her mother tries to disguise it. Increasingly fed up with life on the road and being forced to act like a child while performing, she runs off to elope with Tulsa and forge her own path. Sings “Let Me Entertain You.”
TESSIE TURA: 40-50, alto belt. An aging Burlesque performer with a ballet routine. Tessie is Louise’s dressing room-mate at the Burlesque theatre and becomes quite fond of her. Brassy and funny, she advocates for Louise, helping her find work and bolstering her confidence. Though icy to start, she quickly warms to Louise and the girls. Sings “You Gotta Get A Gimmick.”
MAZEPPA: 40-50, alto belt. Mazeppa is an aging burlesque performer just past her prime. She’s a big personality with an act to match. Frank, boisterous and loud, she takes a liking to June and welcomes her into the burlesque fold. Sings in “You Gotta Get A Gimmick.”
ELECTRA: 35-45, alto belt. Electra is an aging burlesque performer, passing her prime. Her act involves an electrified costume that allows her to make a big impact without even breaking a sweat. Sings in “You Gotta Get A Gimmick.”
TULSA: 20’s to play teen, tenor. Tulsa is one of the boys in Dainty June’s act. Fed up with performing the same routines year after year for no pay and no chance of advancement, Tulsa wises up and breaks out on his own. Charming, winsome and enthusiastic, he is the most ambitious of the boys, if not the most talented. He elopes with June and they run away to form their own act. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings “All I Need Is The Girl.”
CHARACTER MAN #1 (UNCLE JOCKO/PASTEY/MINSKY’S ANNOUNCER)*: 40-50. Actor plays the emcee of Uncle Jocko’s Kiddie Show, the rude young stage manager at the Detroit burlesque theatre, Pastey, and voices the emcee at Minsky’s during Gypsy Rose Lee’s strip routine and other parts throughout.
CHARACTER MAN #2 30-45(GEORGIE/MR. GOLDSTONE/BOUGERONCOCHON/PHILADELPHIA ANNOUNCER)*: Actor plays Georgie, the stage manager for Uncle Jocko’s show, Mr. Goldstone, the mild mannered booker for the Orpheum Circuit and Bougeron-Cochon, the French photographer from Vogue who photographs Gypsy. He also serves as a voice and other parts throughout.
CHARACTER MAN #3 35-45(POP/CIGAR/DETROIT ANNOUNCER)*: Actor plays Rose’s skeptical and worn down father, Pop, as well as the seasoned and salty owner of the Burlesque Theatre, Cigar. Also serves as a voice and plays other small parts throughout.
WEBER/PHIL*: 35-45. Actor plays both Weber, the antagonized theatre manager of the vaudeville house in Los Angeles and Phil, Gypsy Rose Lee’s press agent.

MAMMA MIA!

Rehearsals Begin: Week of July 24, 2018 Performances: August 7 - August 12, 2018
SOPHIE SHERIDAN: Alto with mix. Sophie is 20 years old, sweet, spirited and full of hope. Determined to find the romance and happiness she feels eluded her single mother, Donna, she pursues a conventional marriage despite her own hesitations. Determined to meet her father, she invites her mother’s former suitors to the wedding to find out which of the three it is. Sings extensively throughout, including “I Have a Dream,” “Honey, Honey,” “Lay all Your Love On Me,” and “Under Attack.”
DONNA SHERIDAN: 40’s, Alto. Formerly the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos, free-spirited Donna became pregnant with Sophie at a young age. Owning and operating the Taverna while raising her daughter alone, Donna is tough and independent, yet vulnerable and warm. She grapples not only with her daughter’s choice to marry at just 20 years old but with the sudden appearance of all three of Sophie’s possible fathers. Sings extensively throughout, including “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen,” “Slipping Through My Fingers,” and “The Winner Takes it All.”
TANYA: 40’s, Alto. One of Donna’s best friends and former member of Donna and the Dynamos, Tanya is rich, sophisticated and acerbic. Divorced 3 times and returning to the island for Sophie’s wedding, she can be counted on for humor, wit and maybe even a stiff drink. Sings “Does Your Mother Know,” “Chiquitita,” and “Dancing Queen.”
ROSIE: 40’s, Alto. Donna’s other best friend and the third member of Donna and the Dynamos. Confident, sharp-tongued and a little zany, Rosie runs a feminist publishing company called the “Whole Woman Press.” Sings “Take A Chance on Me,” “Chiquitita,” and “Dancing Queen.”
SKY: 20’s, Tenor. Sophie’s fiancée and a former business school student, Sky has traded in his books for Island life. He has helped Donna modernize the Taverna and plan for its expansion. Sings “Lay All Your Love On Me.”
SAM CARMICHAEL: 40’s, Tenor. One of Sophie’s possible fathers. Sam is a successful Architect and divorcé who has always carried a torch for Donna. Returning to the island, he realizes how much he has missed over the last 20 years, as well as how much he still cares for Donna. Sings “S.O.S.,” and “Knowing Me, Knowing You.”
HARRY BRIGHT: 40’s, Baritone. One of Sophie’s possible fathers. Harry is a sophisticated British financier with a wild past. Formerly “Head Banger” Harry, his return to the island stirs up his long forgotten sense of fun and nostalgia for his carefree youth. Sings “Our Last Summer.” BILL AUSTIN: 40’s, Baritone. One of Sophie’s possible fathers. An Australian travel writer and adventurer happy to live life without strings. Good-natured, jovial, and up for anything that won’t tie him down, Bill is coming around to the idea that having a companion on life’s journey may not be so bad. Sings “The Name Of The Game,” and “Take A Chance On Me.”
BILL AUSTIN: 40’s, Baritone. One of Sophie’s possible fathers. An Australian travel writer and adventurer happy to live life without strings. Good-natured, jovial, and up for anything that won’t tie him down, Bill is coming around to the idea that having a companion on life’s journey may not be so bad. Sings “The Name Of The Game,” and “Take A Chance On Me.”
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

Rehearsals Begin: Week of August 7, 2018 Performances: August 21 - August 26, 2018
SEYMOUR: 30-40, High Baritone. Taken in as an orphan by Mr. Mushnik, Seymour is the menial laborer of the Flower Shop. Naïve, put-upon and completely smitten with Audrey, he’ll do almost anything to change his circumstances. Sweet and well meaning, he becomes the hapless owner of a bizarre, carnivorous plant. Sings “Grow For Me” and “Suddenly Seymour.”
AUDREY: 30-40, Alto belt to E5 with mix. The sweet, bleach-blonde, secret love of Seymour’s life. Audrey is every B-Movie heroine wrapped up in a package with none of the education, confidence, or self-worth. Victim to her abusive Dentist boyfriend, pure-hearted Audrey longs for her little patch of happiness, far from Skid Row. Sings “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly Seymour.”
MUSHNIK: 50’s, Baritone. The down-on-his-luck owner of a failing flower shop on skid row and an unhappy opportunist. Mushnik took Seymour in as an orphan and put him to work in his shop. Fearing Seymour’s sudden fame will cause him to abandon the shop, he swoops in with adoption papers to seal the deal. While not altogether unsympathetic, he is certainly self-serving. Sings “Mushnik and Son.”
DENTIST et al.: 30-40, High Baritone. Orin Scrivello, D.D.S. is tall, handsome and deadly. Egotistical and sadistic, Orin’s fondness for the misery of others and his taste for his own nitrous oxide mean he has found his true calling in dentistry. He is abusive to Audrey and with all the sleaze of an insurance salesman. Actor also plays A Voice not unlike God’s, Wino #2, Customer, Radio Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip, and Patrick Martin. Sings “Dentist!”
CRYSTAL: High belt with mix. Crystal is one of three female street urchins serving as the hip, doo-wop-ing Greek Chorus of the story. Alternating between participating in the action and commenting from the outside, the girls are often the only people on stage who know exactly what is going on. Whip smart and full of attitude, they often address the audience directly. Sing extensively throughout, including “Skid Row,” “Ya Never Know,” and “The Meek Shall Inherit.”
CHIFFON: High belt with mix. Chiffon is one of three female street urchins serving as the hip, young, doowop-ing Greek Chorus of the story. Alternating between participating in the action and commenting from the outside, the girls are often the only people on stage who know exactly what is going on. Whip smart and full of attitude, they often address the audience directly. Sings; “Skid Row,” “Ya Never Know,” and “The Meek Shall Inherit.”
RONETTE: High belt with mix. Ronette is one of three female street urchins serving as the hip, young, doo-wop-ing Greek Chorus of the story. Alternating between participating in the action and commenting from the outside, the girls are often the only people on stage who know exactly what is going on. Whip smart and full of attitude, they often address the audience directly. Sings; “Skid Row,” “Ya Never Know,” and “The Meek Shall Inherit.”
AUDREY II (VOICE): Bass with G4. Audrey II is a wisecracking, flesh eating, anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado. Purchased by Seymour during a total eclipse of the sun, Audrey II grows from a blood thirsty seedling to a street-smart, conniving villain with a lot of attitude and a tremendous appetite. Sings “Git It!” and “Suppertime.”
