BREAKDOWN

SARAH WEDDINGTON (Female, 30-40 years old, white) Plays 20-70 years old. Charming, brilliant, and warm. Keeps herself composed in difficult circumstances while not being too formal. She is originally from Texas and embodies a sense of tradition Southern beauty. Knows how to use her femininity to her benefit. Seeking an actor with great depth and a comedic sense and whip smart with language.

NORMA McCORVEY (Female, 30-40 years old, white) Plays 20-60 years old. The playwright describes her as funny, angry, hard drinking and drugging, lesbian from Texas. In contrast to SARAH she leads with her heart. Desperate for love and understanding. Wears everything she is feeling on her sleeve. While not formally educated she is smart. An emotional and energetic powerhouse. Historically she was called “Pixie” due to her small frame and bold personality.

CONNIE/OFELIA (Female, 40-50 years old, Latinx) CONNIE is the heart and soul of the play. Simple, grounded, soulful and even tempered. Complex and subtle. She is soft spoken and keeps to herself but in no way is she a doormat. Everything she says is from the heart. An extremely wise old soul. She understands what true loves is and see’s the world without judgement.

OFELIA is a role in the ensemble. She is a devout Catholic.

LINDA/JUDY/PEGGY/MARIAH/ELEANOR SMEAL/ENSEMBLE (Female, Late 20’s-30’s, white) Feminine, sweet and a bit old-fashioned. Smart and able to keep up with the charm and brilliance of SARAH. Seeking an actor with a great sense of comedy and flexibility to play many characters within the ensemble.

RONDA/HELEN/GLORIA ALLRED/HOLLY HUNTER/ENSEMBLE (Female, 30’s-40’s, white) Honest, earnest and unapologetic in her beliefs. Her sincerity is persuasive. Genuine and Trustworthy. Seeking an actor with a great sense of comedy and flexibility to play many characters within the ensemble.

AILEEN/BARBARA/UMA/FLO KENNEDY/DAVINA/ENSEMBLE (Female, Late 20’s-30’s, Black) Seeking an actor to play a range of ensemble roles. Passionate and smart BARBARA to AILEEN, who is working class with a big heart. She also plays a formal and polished TV personality and the iconic feminist lawyer and civil rights activist FLO KENNEDY.

MOLLY/MARY/KATE MICHAELMAN/MARY GILMOUR/ENSEMBLE (Female, 40’s-60’s, white) Seeking an actor to play a range of ensemble roles with great comedic timing. Can play both upper middle class to working class. Contains the ability to be both cruel and an absolute delight.

ROXY (Female, Early 20’s, Afro-Latinx/Black) A brilliant and vulnerable young woman seeking guidance from the other women in the play. Must have access to emotional availability. Full of heart.

EMILY/MELISSA (Female, 7-12 years old, white) Sweet, kind, good, angelic. Sees the best and wants the best for people including Norma. Thinks church is a happy and loving place. See’s the world simply and innocently. Happy, at ease with herself.

FLIP/RON/JAY FLOYD/MICHAEL MANHEIM/ENSEMBLE (Male, 40-50 years, white) FLIP is a true man of God. Deeply convicted that there is a right way. A righteous man. Gets along with people very easily and very persuasive. Not a manipulator, truly believes in his cause. He is warm and has a Southern charm. Has a bit of sex appeal. Seeking an actor with great comic and character abilities to play the additional ensemble roles.

MCCLUSKY/ROBERT FLOWERS/BEAU/ENSEMBLE (Male, 40-50 years old, white) Seeking a transformative character actor. Charming, funny, likeable. Plays characters in the middle to upper middle class.

BLACKMUN/FRED FRIENDLY/FRED GILMOUR/WADE/ENSEMBLE (Male, 50’s-60’s, white) BLACKMUN is a thoughtful and often tormented by his thoughts. He is not arrogant, but very intelligent. Has a strong moral center. Seeking an actor that can transform into many different characters of different class and background.
