BREAKDOWN
Play Description:
This story of Eliza Doolittle and her professor, Henry Higgins, was made into a musical much more famous than the original play by the impeccable G.B. Shaw. A wonderful comedic comment on the silliness of class structure in Britain, the topic of the play is very timely in today’s world, where appearance trumps reality almost every time. Wit and wisdom combine with a clever plot to create a comedic masterpiece. We laugh as we realize that the real values of honesty, integrity, and love are what matter in the end.
Eliza Doolittle (Lead):
Female, early 20s; feisty, rough around the edges, passionate, and independent, transforms from street rabble to a proper British lady; ability to sustain a range of British dialects is essential. Theatre prefers to cast this character as African American, but open to casting as any ethnicity.
Professor Higgins (Lead):
Male, late 20-ish; marches to the beat of his own drum; incredibly self assured, sometimes to the detriment of those around him; can come across as rude, but should probably be considered more aloof than intentionally malicious; strong proper British accent essential. Any ethnicity.
Colonel Pickering (Supporting):
Male, 50-65. Avuncular, sympathetic, protective, caring personality; strong very British upper-crust accent. Any ethnicity
Mrs Higgins (Supporting):
Female, 50-69. Higgins’ mother; very elegant and aristocratic; disapproves of her son's behavior. Any ethnicity.
Alfred Doolittle (Supporting):
Male, 45-55. Eliza’s father; street-wise and likeable, even when doing less-than-honorable things
Theatre prefers to cast this character as African American, but open to casting as any ethnicity
Mrs. Pearce (Supporting):
Female, 40s-50s. Prof Higgins’ housekeeper; warm and motherly, but willing to speak candidly with Higgins when necessary. Any ethnicity.
Mrs. Eynsford-Hill (Supporting):
Female, 40s. Though her social status has recently fallen, she does her best to act as if it has not. Any ethnicity
Freddie Eynsford-Hill (Supporting):
Male, early 20s. Mrs. Eynsford-Hill's son; falls in love with Eliza; typical rather soppy young man.
