Equity actors and actor/singers for various roles in the upcoming season.

All stage manager positions have been filled.

PREPARATION

Please prepare two contrasting selections: one contemporary monologue, and either one brief song from the musical theatre repertoire or one classical speech, preferably a Shakespeare monologue in verse.

CHARACTERS:

Bigger – African-American man of 20

The Black Rat – African-American male 20s, the voice inside Bigger’s head

Mary – Caucasian female, early 20s, edgy and simultaneously precious

Jan – Caucasian male, 30s, well-intentioned with an edge; also plays STORE OWNER, POLICE #2, and others

Hannah – African-American female, early 40s, tough, broken, the edge of anger, plays a variety of roles

Buddy – African-American male to play teens, soft, a follower, also plays NEGRO CLERK, JACKSON, and others

Bessie – African-American female to play teens to mid 20s; alcoholic, also plays VERA, LESLIE, and others

Mrs. Dalton – Caucasian female, late 40s to early 50s, blind and well-intentioned also plays AGENT and others

Britten – Caucasian male, 40s-50s, main investigator, thrives on mischief; also plays NEWSREEL V.O., MOVIE V.O., POLICE #1, and others

CHARACTERS:

Allison – The last single woman in NYC. 30-something. A food writer. She yells the loudest at the people she loves the most. Open to all ethnicities.

Jonathan – 30-something lawyer in NYC. A charming, single New Yorker with a good job at a top Manhattan law firm who knows his way around a dating app. Actor also plays TODD. Open to all ethnicities.

Declan – 30-something editor in NYC with a high-stress job at the intersection of many competing interests. Working at maintaining boundaries between his personal and professional life, to mixed results. Open to all ethnicities.

Sunshine – 30-something mother in NYC. Passionately eco-conscious. Actress also plays Server and Liz.

Cow Lady – A mother. From another time. She knows everything about cows. Actress plays the Auctioneer, State Fair Judge, Instructional Video Voice Over Woman.

From Branden’s script: “This play is written for a company of nine performers of varying generations, gender and ethnic identities.”

Usher / God / Understanding – played by an actual usher – or at least it should initially seem so

Death – played by the oldest actor in the company

Somebodies – played by five actors until they become something else

Everybody – played by a SOMEBODY as determined by chance

Friendship / Strength / Kinship / Beauty / Cousin / Mind / Stuff / Senses – played by the remaining SOMEBODIES as determined by chance

Girl – played by a young child stolen from the audience – or at least it should initially seem so

Love – played by an audience member – or at least it should initially seem so

CHARACTERS:

Tania Del Valle – 29 year old Latina. Born and raised in New Mexico. 8 months pregnant and working on her Doctoral Thesis in Anthropology.

Pablo Del Valle – 31 year old Latino. Born and raised in Chile. From a privileged upbringing, he is an ambitious attorney and the newest member of a prestigious firm in Washington, D.C.

Virginia Butley – 55-65 year old Caucasian. From Buffalo. The only female executive working for a large defense contractor in the DC area.

Frank Butley – 55-65 year old Caucasian. From New England. A friendly neighbor who has completely devoted himself to his pristine English garden in his retirement.
