BREAKDOWN

Gina was warned that one of her students would be a problem. Eighteen years old and strikingly odd, Dennis writes violently obscene work clearly intended to unsettle those around him. Determined to know whether he’s a real threat, Gina compels Dennis to attend her office hours. But as the clock ticks down, Gina realizes that “good” versus “bad” is nothing more than a convenient illusion, and that the isolated young student in her office has learned one thing above all else: For the powerless, the ability to terrify others is powerful indeed.

Gina: 30s. Korean-American; a creative writing professor, who uses teaching as an outlet for her own creativity, Gina finds herself ambivalent about her own writing/process; when faced with Dennis, a troubled/troubling and potentially dangerous student, Gina, unlike her colleagues, does not reject him; determined and dedicated, Gina approaches Dennis with rigorous empathy and encourages him to open up.

Dennis: Korean-American; 18+ to play a college freshman; an awkward outsider who is ostracized by his peers and most teachers; vulnerable and odd, Dennis has discovered the power of silence and relishes how unsettling it is to others, yet he doesn’t fully understand how unsettling/threatening he is to them: When he finally engages with Gina, he is surprisingly empathetic; seeking a physically adept actor who is expressive and compelling even when not speaking.

?David: 30s. Hipster screenwriting/playwriting professor used to affection and attention from his students; as soon as he sells his first pilot David plans to bid academia adieu; he is angry that Dennis has disrupted his usually chill class and dismisses Dennis’ poor and offensive writing without wanting to understand Dennis’ behavior; not without compassion, David sees a kid who is troubled, not a troubled kid.

Genevieve: compassionate and well-meaning poetry teacher who initially endeavors to strategize how best to address a student as disturbing/disruptive as Dennis, but ultimately does not succeed; frustrated, angry and spent after having Dennis as a student Genevieve welcomes the fact that Dennis is now Gina’s problem
