BREAKDOWN

TWO SISTERS AND A PIANO by Nilo Cruz

SEEKING:

MARIA CELIA: Female, 25-35 The eldest of the sisters, living in a forced house arrest at the behest of a fascist regime. She is a pragmatic leader and a formidable presence as head of the household. In private, she is a secret romantic and a poet in her own rite, longing for escape, writing to her husband who lives separate from her, in exile. Maria Celia ignores the advances of the Lieutenant until, in her desperation, she finds there may be power to yield from the relationship.

SOFIA: Female, 25-35 Younger of the two sisters, a pianist and a dreamer. She is a complex young woman who struggles with her emergent sexuality, brimming with passion and a curiosity for the world. The first man who enters their space, The Piano Tuner, becomes her love interest, much like Miranda in The Tempest. She is impressionable and impulsive, having grown up in confinement. Her freedom calls to her until it can no longer be ignored.

LIEUTENANT PORTUONDO: Male, 30-60 A pawn of the regime who has grown up in a position of limited influence. He wields his power when he can. Upon falling for the wilted Maria Celia, he finds an opportunity to woo her and actively pursues it. A conflicted man of questionable judgment, he finds himself in trouble of his own making, with big decisions to make.

VICTOR MANUEL/MILITIA GUARD #1: Male, 31-50 Piano tuner. He is the only person allowed to visit Maria Celia and Sofia in their confinement. A musician with a utilitarian position, he works the system in order to survive. He has a free spirit, a tender heart, and an eye for hypocrisy. His worldview shifts as he spends more time with Sofia.
