STORYLINE: Medea, a Mexican seamstress of extraordinary skill, barely survived the perilous border crossing into the United States and lives uneasily in a borrowed Los Angeles house with her husband Hason and their young son Acan: the tension between their traditional values and assimilation is a matter of life and death. Blending wry humor, tragedy, and mysticism, MOJADA unleashes the power of Euripides’ ancient tale through an unforgettable story of an undocumented family caught in the grip of the American immigration system.

SEEKING:

MEDEA, Female, 20s; speaks Spanish and English and Nahuatl; an indigenous Mexican woman from Zamora de Hidalgo, Michoacán. A highly gifted and artistic seamstress; birdlike, beautiful but worn, contemplative, determined, mystical. Devoted to Hason, her first and only love, she believes in a wife's duty. A mother. Reluctant to leave the property, and suspicious of the acculturation of her family after leaving their family farm, she carries the trauma of their border crossing. Alarmingly accurate bird call. Still connected to the old country; she’s of another time. Has done everything Hason has asked her to do for his success. Gets headaches: her mind is filled with thoughts: sewing keeps her calm. Knows the brujeria ways and is cautioned to hold them at bay.

HASON, Male, 30s; speaks Spanish and English; Latine. Tan guapo, charming, sexy, handsome, a businessman and now executive who was formerly a man who worked with his hands. A bastard and a man of secrets (according to Tita), loves Medea nonetheless in his way. Big visions for the future and willing to work for it. Doesn’t have to be a king, but something better than a beggar. Highly flirtatious. Willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead in American life.

ACAN, Male, a child 10 years old or younger; Mexican; speaks Spanish and English, and Nahuatl, when pushed by Medea; the son of Hason and Medea. Devoted to his parents, or anyone who will take the best care of him. Transforms across the play to a fully assimilated young American boy. He plays soccer and skateboards; enjoys wii and swimming.

TITA, Female, 60s, speaks Spanish, English, and Nahuatl, a Nahua viejita and a healer from a long line of healers. Worn but enduring, the servant to the house of Medea and Hason. A mother with no children, protective, constantly accused of “doing nothing” by Hason. Willing to submit to some of the new world. Fiercely devoted to Medea, she will die with her in her grave, having come into her family as a young girl herself.

JOSEFINA, Female, 30s; speaks English and Spanish; originally from Carapan, Mexico, but now settled into Los Angeles life. A no-nonsense street vendor of pan dulce. Speaks freely and with abandon. Longs for a child. Married for a long time to an “ugly” husband whom she loves, a migrant currently away in Oregon. Misses home and still feels connected to the old country; breaks down with longing and exhaustion, usually in the garage and not in front of others. She spends all day working and peddling the barrio gossip from her cart. Says the truth, even if it’s difficult; doing her best to hold the old world with the new.

ARMIDA, Female, 50s; speaks Spanish and English; Latine; a true senora, la mera mera, a businesswoman, Hason’s boss. A significant and successful contractor in the barrio, she learned how to play the game by marrying into business, and now her business is only family. She takes pride and credit for the things that she does. Doesn’t mean to be cruel: her time is short. Drinks beer. Studied Business Management at LA City College. Wears Ann Taylor, shiny clothes. Willing to show some cleavage to do business.
