PREPARATION

Please prepare an appropriate, character driven song to sing (or monologue for Arsenic and Old Lace) in the allotted time (3 minutes) allowed. You may sing/read from show material. Please bring sheet music (for the musicals) and picture and resumes for the # of shows you would like to be considered.

MATILDA

NOTE: The role of Miss Trunchbull has been cast.

MATILDA: Must be able to play 8-9 years old. Open to all ethnicities. Incredibly clever and smarter than almost everyone around her. Lives with her abusive family and escapes into her books with her imagination. Has gift of telekinesis. Bright and fearless. Very focused and with a strong moral compass. Must have a strong understanding of the text and be a confident singer/actor. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano, up to C5 (D5 in passing). HEIGHT: 3'11-4'5”. DANCE: Strong mover.

MISS HONEY: Open to all ethnicities. 30s. A mild, quiet person who never raises her voice and seldom seems to smile. She is adored by every small child under her care. She is drawn to Matilda and cares for her. Miss Honey is “so slim and fragile that if she fell over she would smash into a thousand pieces like a porcelain figure. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo/Soprano, has low notes as well (F3 to D5). DANCE: Strong mover.

MR. WORMWOOD: Open to all ethnicities. Late 30s-40s. Matilda’s cruel father who works as a sleazy, scheming second-hand car salesman. He is “a mean crooked crook. A bit of a buffoon. Strong comedy and physicality. Weasely and ratty essence. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor, up to A4. DANCE: comedic movement ability, clowning.

MRS. WORMWOOD: Open to all ethnicities. Late 30s-40s. Very loud and abusive. Her loudness is parallel to her makeup and wardrobe. Obsessed with her dancing partner and her looks. Mother of Michael and Matilda, and the wife of Mr. Wormwood. Like her husband she thinks very little of Matilda’s unique abilities and often berates her. Must have a strong sense of comedy. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo/Soprano, up to a F5. DANCE: Strong dancer.

MRS. PHELPS:African American, Caribbean. Late 30’s-50s. Loving and caring Librarian who loves all of Matilda's stories. She is very nurturing and supportive. VOCAL RANGE: Any. DANCE: Mover

BRUCE:Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. He is one of Matilda’s classmates. He is a large boy; he eats a slice of Miss Trunchbull’s chocolate cake and is punished by having to eat the whole cake in front of the class. Bruce leads the revolt in “Revolting Children”. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor, up to E5 (F#5 in riffs optional). HEIGHT: 4'9-4'11. DANCE: Strong dance ability.

LAVENDER: Female. Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. Matilda's best friend and classmate. She is very interesting and has a strong sense of self. Fun and quirky. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano. HEIGHT: 4'4-4'6 DANCE: Strong dance ability.

ENSEMBLE:

ERIC: Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. Terrible at physical education. He gets his ears pulled by Trunchbull. Very sweet and shy. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor. HEIGHT: 4'0-4'2. DANCE: Strong dance ability

NIGEL: Male. Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. One of Matilda's classmates. Very enthusiastic and thinks very highly off himself. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor. HEIGHT:4'4-4'6. DANCE: Strong dance ability

AMANDA: Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. One of Matilda's classmates. She is not allowed to have pigtails but wears them anyway. She gets thrown across the playground by Trunchbull. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano. HEIGHT: 4'2-4'4 CAN BE SMALLER. DANCE: Strong dance ability

TOMMY: Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. He is one of Matilda’s classmates. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor. HEIGHT: 4'7-4'10. DANCE: Strong dance ability.

HORTENSIA:Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. She is one of Matilda’s classmates. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano. HEIGHT: 4'9-4'11. DANCE: Strong dance ability.

ALICE: Must be able to play 8-11 years old. Open to all ethnicities. She is one of Matilda’s classmates. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano. HEIGHT: 4'5-4'7. DANCE: Strong dance ability.

MICHAEL WORMWOOD/ENSEMBLE: Open to all ethnicities. 20s.Must be able to play teenager. He is Matilda's older teenage brother. He speaks very few words. He is very dim and unsocial. He is bonded to his father. Must have a dead-pan quality to him. VOCAL RANGE: Any. DANCE: Strong dancer.

ACROBAT/ENSEMBLE: Female. Open to all ethnicities. 20's-early 30’s Married to the Escapologist. She is the character in one of Matilda’s “fictional” stories. VOCAL RANGE: Alto - Soprano. DANCE: Strong dancer.

ESCAPOLOGIST/ENSEMBLE: Male.Open to all ethnicities. 20's- early 30’s.Married to the Acrobat. He is a character in one of Matilda’s “fictional” stories. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone/Tenor - up to D4. DANCE: Strong dancer.

RUDOLPHO/ENSEMBLE: Male. Open to all ethnicities.20s-30s. Mrs. Wormwood's dance partner. Lots of flare. Italian. Fit and athletic. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone/Tenor, up to F4 (optional up to A4). DANCE: Strong dancer. Latin dance experience.

SERGEI/ENSEMBLE: Male.30's. Open to all ethnicities. Russian Mafia Boss who is physically intimidating. Broad shouldered and tall. Although he is imposing and tough, he recognizes Matilda’s unique and special qualities and shows her kindness. Must have strong Russian accent. VOCAL RANGE: Any. DANCE: Strong dancer.

DOCTOR/ENSEMBLE : Male.20's. Open to all ethnicities. Delivers Matilda. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor, up to A5. DANCE: Strong dancer.

CHILDREN'S ENTERTAINER: Male. Late 20's-30's. Open to all ethnicities. Starts the show as an entertainer for the children. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone/Tenor, up to F4. DANCE: Strong dancer.

MECHANIC/ENSEMBLE: Male. 20's, 30's. Open to all ethnicities. VOCAL RANGE: Any. DANCE: Strong dancer.

COOK/ENSEMBLE: Female. 20's. Open to all ethnicities. VOCAL RANGE: Any. DANCE: Strong dancer.

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE

Abby Brewster: 60-70. A sweet elderly woman with Victorian charm who poisons elderly men. Abby is the sister of Martha and an aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

Martha Brewster: 60-70 Also a darling elderly lady who poisons elderly men. Martha is the sister of Abby and an aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

Mortimer Brewster: Late 20’s to 35. Nephew of Abby and Martha, Mortimer is a drama critic. A good-hearted cynic, he is engaged to Elaine. Mortimer cares for his aunts, but his world is turned upside-down as he tries to untangle their crazy, homicidal dilemma.

Elaine Harper: 25-30. An attractive girl in her twenties, and Mortimer’s fiancée, Elaine is the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Harper, who lives next-door to Abby and Martha. She is surprisingly wise in the ways of the world for a minister's daughter.

Teddy Brewster: 40-55. Nephew of Abby and Martha Brewster. Teddy is a delightfully certifiable man who is under the happy delusion that he is Theodore Roosevelt.

Jonathan Brewster: 40’s. Nephew of Abby and Martha Brewster, Jonathan is a psychopath who has had plastic surgery and now looks like Boris Karloff.

Dr. Einstein: 35-60. A plastic surgeon and an alcoholic, Dr. Einstein has changed Jonathan's face three times.

The Rev. Dr. Harper: 50-65. Minister and protective father of Elaine.

Officer O'Hara: 30-55. A police officer who doesn't really want to be an officer. He wants to write plays and is eager to tell the renowned critique Mortimer about his plot. He's not very good at reading the room or knowing when now is not a good time.

Lieutenant Roony: 30-55. A tough and dominating police officer, the commanding officer of the precinct.

Officer Brophy: 25-45. An officer of the law who is likable but maybe not the brightest man on the force.

Officer Klein: 25-45. A pleasant (but somewhat dim witted) neighborhood police officer, partner to Brophy.

Mr. Witherspoon: 50-60. The superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium.

Mr. Gibbs: 60-70. An elderly man who wishes to rent a room from the Brewster sisters, narrowly escaping poison.

Maria Rainer: 20-5 A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey – young, free spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination. Musical theatre mix/soprano. (B3-G5) Moves well.

Captain Georg von Trapp (bass/baritone (F#2-E4), moves well, 35-50) A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life to repress his sadness over the death of his wife; underneath, he is warm, understanding, and determined.

Max Detweiller (Baritone C3-F4 moves well, 35-40’s) Charming and vital; a man of sophistication who enjoys the good life; true and loyal friend to the von Trapp family.

Elsa Schrader (Soprano, C4-B5, moves well, 35-45) A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated, dignified and mature.

Mother Abbess (legit soprano C4-Ab5, 40+, very strong actress) Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative, but kind.

Liesl von Trapp (mezzo, dance, adult to play 16) The oldest child, blossoming into a young lady with an interest in boys. She has a maternal edge to her and cares very deeply for her younger siblings. Musical theater dance training, ballet technique a plus. Must be an excellent singer-soprano range.

Friedrich von Trapp To play 14.Tough exterior, very much trying to be “the man” of the family. Basic movement skills. Must be an excellent singer-soprano range.

Louisa von Trapp To play 13. Rebellious attitude. Basic movement skills. Must be an excellent singer-soprano range.

Kurt von Trapp To play 10, falsetto. Gentle and mischievous. Basic movement skills. Must be an excellent singer-soprano range.

Brigitta von Trapp To play 9 Smart, reads a lot. Basic movement skills. Must be an excellent singer-soprano range.

Marta von Trapp To play 7. Very sweet and gentle. Basic movement skills. Must be an excellent singer-soprano range.

Gretl von Trapp To play 6. Must have the cute factor. Basic movement skills. Must be an excellent singer-soprano range.

Rolf Gruber (Baritone D3-E4, dance, adult to play 17-20) Suitor to Liesl, telegram delivery boy, later Nazi soldier. A very pleasant young man, somewhat aggressive but in a gentle way. Musical theater dance training, ballet technique a plus.

Sister Berthe (Mezzo Soprano B3-D5, moves well) Mistress of Novices, prudish, straight laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.

Sister Margaretta (Soprano B3-F5, moves well) Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned.

Sister Sophia (Mezzo soprano B3-Eb5, moves well) Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.

Franz (non-singing, 30+) The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is very German and loyal to the Fascist cause.

Frau Schmidt (non-singing, 30+) The housekeeper, stoic, very little personality; she does her job efficiently but without affection. Strong and somewhat dominating.

Herr Zeller (non-singing, 40+) Stern and unsmiling, a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.

CHORUS:

5 male chorus members (18-60+ years) – Nazi soldiers, neighbors, Salzburg citizens and Georg’s friends (of naval background).

7 female chorus members (18-60+ years) – Legit altos and sopranos. Salzburg citizens, new postulant, nuns, novices, postulants and contestants in the Festival Concert.

MAMMA MIA!

Donna – 40s, earthy and unpretentious, strong exterior and resolve, but peppered with vulnerabilities. Exceptional singer and actor.

Sophie – 20. Very much Donna’s daughter in that she is strong willed and earthy, but has found her own softer colors as well. She still retains the romantic notions of love that Donna has lost. Strong singer.

Tanya – late 30s to 40s – wealthy, socialite, likes her creature comforts, very conscious of her appearance, uses her looks and sexiness to get things she wants. But is generous with a good heart. Comedic actor with a strong voice and can dance.

Rosie – late 30s to 40s – sassy and funny. Cookbook author. Former member of the Donna and the Dynamos 70’s singing group. Strong singer with a great sense of comedy.

Harry Bright – 40s – British banker, a bit of an uptight stuffed shirt – he has lost the internal freedom that he once had when he was the “Head Banger” rocker who loved Donna. Wealthy. Being on vacation reignites the optimist he once was. Must sing. Guitar skills a plus.

Bill Austin – 40s – Aussie adventurer and author. Brawny outdoorsman with a giant zest for life. Crocodile Dundee meets Bear Grylis. Must sing.

Sam Carmichael – 40’s - American, successful architect. Self-possessed, honest, open, compassionate, and practical. Still very much in love with Donna. Strong singer.

Sky – Late 20s – Fresh faced, guileless and open, he is self-confident and will speak up when he feels strongly about something. Is deeply in love with Sophie. Strong singer.

Pepper - 20s Pepper and Eddie are Sky’s friends who help run the hotel. Pepper is charming, loves older women, and is always flirting. Break dancing or Acrobatic skills a plus. Baritone/tenor.

Eddie - 20s - Eddie and Pepper are Sky’s friends who help run the hotel. Eddie is laid-back and easygoing. Must be a good mover/dancer. Tenor/baritone.

Lisa and Ali - 20’s - Sophie’s best friends and bridesmaids. Likable and good with comedy. Must dance and have strong voices.

Ensemble: Male and Female strong dancers/singers. Ages 20-50.
