Breakdown

Maria Callas: Female, late 40's – late 50’s. La Divina. The legendary singer years after her singing career had ended. Based on a series of teaching sessions she gave at Juilliard back in the 1970's. Fiery, strong, magnetic presence - at the same time vulnerable and insecure - as she explores her past and relationships with the students, stage, audiences, the press, Aristotle Onassis and her own self-image. ACTRESS SHOULD BE ABLE TO SING OPERA AT LEAST SOMEWHAT.

Sharon Graham: Female, 20s, all ethnicities. Opera student, dramatic soprano, youthful, but full of potential, well-trained and well-prepared, soaks up Callas' teaching like a sponge but has her own opinions as well, determined. MUST BE STRONG OPERA SINGER.

Tony Candolino: Male, 20s, all ethnicities. Opera student, tenor, has a confidence that comes from being good-looking and talented, accustomed to relying on his charm, knows his shortcomings and truly wants to learn from Callas. MUST BE STRONG OPERA SINGER.

Sophie De Palma: Female, 20s, opera student, all ethnicities. Soprano, timid, perhaps a bit mousey, eager to please, impressionable, a young woman who has heretofore given more thought to making a pretty sound than to what she is meant to be communicating via song. MUST BE DECENT OPERA SINGER.

Stagehand: Male, 20's-30's, all ethnicities. Calm collected, unfazed by Callas' treatment of him. DOES NOT NEED TO SING. NON-EQUITY.

Manny: Accompanist. CAST.
