BREAKDOWN

MARJORIE PRIME

Stage West

Actors of all ethnicities and gender identities are encouraged to audition. In reference to the character descriptions below - most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But how ever limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide (Language developed by Kevin Kantor and Emily Tarquin from the Actors Theatre of Louisville).

If you are unable to attend, you may submit a video submission at: https://tinyurl.com/59a2dwps . Please submit no later than June 23, 2023 by 5:00PM CT

In the near future, Marjorie and her daughter are worried that her memory may be fading. That is until the appearance of Walter, a mysterious and charming young visitor who arrives to help Marjorie uncover the intricacies of her own past. But a secret truth is about to blur the lines between human and machine. In this richly spare, wondrous new play, profound questions emerge about the limits of technology and whether or not memory is an exclusively human invention.

SEEKING:

Marjorie: She/her. 85. Any ethnicity - may relate to Walter and Tess. A dementia patient; cheerful but opinionated and assertive; loves her daughter, Tess, even though their relationship is a little distant; holds on dearly to the past (sometimes at the expense of the present), including close family members that died a while back; her relationship with her son-in-law, Jon, was rough at first, but has now grown into one of fondness.

Walter: He/him. Early 30s. Any ethnicity - may relate to Marjorie and Tess. A computer-generated holographic replica of Marjorie's deceased husband, Walter, designed to provide her with comfort; designed with AI tech of the future, Walter is very human-like in his behaviors, and as he learns through conversation, he becomes a better representation of the original Walter, at least as Marjorie remembers him.

Tess: She/her. Early 50s. Any ethnicity - may relate to Marjorie and Walter. Marjorie's daughter; very strong willed, wants to be in control, comfortable with confrontation to get what she wants; stuggles with communicating her feelings and keeps her fears and skeletons hidden; has a troubled relationship with her mother and her youngest daughter; highly skeptical of technology and holographic beings as human companions.

Jon: He/him. 50s. Any ethnicity. Tess' husband of 30+ years; calm and balanced, radically liberal; has not let Marjorie's initial resistance to his family background come in the way of their relationship; the peacemaker of the family, keeps lines of communications open between wife and children, and now mediates between Tess and Marjorie; technology early adopter and was the one to recommend getting Marjorie a holographic Prime as a companion.
