SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in MACBETH for Commonwealth Shakespeare Company 2023 Season (See breakdown).

The 27th annual Free Shakespeare on the Boston Common production of MACBETH by William Shakespeare.

We are looking for actors who are fluid and comfortable in their bodies, with clarity and vividness in the text. We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting. All roles are open to qualified performers without regard to age, sex, ethnicity, disability, race, color, national origin, body type, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis prohibited by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Please prepare a brief classical monologue, preferably Shakespeare and in verse, no longer than 2 minutes. Please include in your video a brief introduction of yourself, your pronouns, and your piece. Submit your headshot, resume and audition video at:

All shows are at 8pm (save one access oriented matinee at 6pm, date TBA.)

All performers who submit videos through this submission process will receive a response by February 28, 2023 whether or not they are invited to this or a later callback.

This production will be rehearsed indoors in Boston, MA and then transfer to CSC’s outdoor performance space on the Boston Common for tech and performances.

BREAKDOWN

COVID: All rehearsals and performances will be held in accordance with the most up to date state, city, and union safety protocols regarding COVID-19. CSC will require all staff and performers to provide proof of a completed FDA-approved vaccine regimen for COVID-19 (at least two weeks past the final dose of Pfizer/Moderna or two weeks past the dose of J&J). This policy allows for exemption accommodations for disability or religious reasons. Additional protocols regarding masking, testing, and/or vaccine booster requirements will be announced closer to the start of rehearsals.

LINE DRAWN: Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is participating in the Pilot Cohort of the StageSource Line Drawn Community Standards Initiative to prevent harassment and abuse in the New England performing arts community. By developing programs and resources specifically for the needs of the New England performing arts community, Line Drawn aims to create safer and more equitable work environments. SEEKING:

All roles will be understudied within the company.

Macbeth has been cast.

Lady Macbeth: Ambitious wife of a would-be king; strong pull to create a more important life; powerful, judgmental, but ultimately fragile.

Duncan: Kind and popular but firm, the current King of Scotland. Passes power onto his son, Malcolm, and is in turn murdered by Macbeth.

Malcolm: Duncan’s eldest son. Ultimately raises an army to defeat Macbeth for the throne of Scotland.

Macduff: A Thane of Scotland who suspects Macbeth of killing Duncan, and whose own family is killed because of it. Vows revenge.

Banquo: Fellow soldier and companion of Macbeth who also receives a prophecy from the Weird Sisters, thus dooming him. His ghost visits Macbeth at the banquet.

Ross: Thane of Scotland, cousin of Macduff, and often the bearer of important or difficult news. Ultimately turns on Macbeth.

Sergeant/Porter/Doctor: All three characters impart wisdom and foresight about the events and circumstances of the play.


Lennox: Thane of Scotland, suspects and eventually turns on Macbeth.

First Witch: A weird sister. Vengeful feeling. One who reveals partial truths to Macbeth and Banquo, beginning his tragic journey.
